3 Common & Proper Nouns common A common noun names a general item. – Common nouns are not capitalized. specific A proper noun names a specific person, place, thing, or idea. – Proper nouns are capitalized. 4 Concrete & Abstract Nouns concrete A concrete noun names something that can be recognized through any of the five senses. abstract An abstract noun names something that cannot be recognized through the senses. – Disapproval is an example of an abstract noun. – What color is disapproval? You don't know because you cannot see it. – What texture is disapproval? Who knows? You cannot touch it. – What flavor is disapproval? No clue! You cannot taste it! – Does it make a sound? Of course not! – Does it smell? Not a bit!

7 Count & Non-Count Nouns Countnouns Count nouns name things that can be counted. Non-countnouns Non-count nouns name things that cannot be counted. 8 Action Verbs actionverb An action verb describes what the subject of a sentence is doing. carries Example: The man carries the ladder. – Carries is the verb that tells what the man is doing with the ladder. remembered Example: Jade remembered to bring her puzzle. – Remembered is the verb that explains Jade’s actions with the puzzle.

9 Circle the Action Verbs For breakfast, Mom usually eats cereal. Traffic slows dramatically during rush hour. My grandma’s flowers bloomed this weekend. The new books arrived last week.

10 Linking Verbs linkingverb A linking verb is a verb that connects a subject with a word that describes or identifies it. – Example: The winners were Tony and me. Common Linking Verbs: am are is was were am being are being is being was being were being

11 Circle the Linking Verbs The driver was unhappy with his car. This story is about a lost rabbit. They were delighted with their grades. Sheila waved to the neighbors.

12 Helping Verbs Sometimes a verb in a sentence is just one word. Often, however, a verb will be made up of several words. This type of verb is called a verb phrase. Helpingverbs Helping verbs are added before another verb to make a verb phrase.

13 Helping Verbs Notice how these helping verbs change the meaning of the verb run. run had run will have run might have run should have run will be running Forms of be are often used as helping verbs!
