2 Working in the UK Tier 4 visas and sandwich placements Tier 2 (General) visa Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) Scheme Tier 4 Doctorate Extension Scheme Tier 5 – Youth Mobility Tier 5 – Temporary Worker – Government Authorised Exchange Schemes

3 Working in the UK on Tier 4 A Tier 4 (General) student visa lets you work: Up to 20 hours a week in semester-time, including when PGs are working on dissertation Full-time when you have completed your course, and handed in all your work Full-time on a sandwich placement

4 Sandwich placements A placement must be part of a sandwich degree It must be: An official part of your academic course agreed by your Oxford Brookes Department Be no more than 50% of your course.

5 Make sure you have enough time on your Tier 4 visa If your course end date has changed since you got your visa, perhaps because you are re-taking modules or coursework, you may be able to extend your Tier 4 visa and get extra leave at the end of your course You must apply as soon as possible and before your course ends Talk to ISAT if you have any questions about this

6 Tier 2 (General) Work Route The job must have a particular skills level A specified minimum wage (min £20,500 pa) Employer will have to have a Tier 2 licence Jobs will have to be secured before applying

7 Attributes for applying 50 points for a valid Certificate of Sponsorship 10 points for English language skills 10 points for Maintenance (funds) You will need to show £900 for 90 consecutive days (£945 from 1 July 2014)

9 Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) Scheme Scheme designed to assist international graduates in obtaining a specialist visa to stay in the UK, initially for 1 year The university will endorse you if you have a viable business plan Plans need to be genuine, credible and innovative business ideas University’s Commercialisation Review panel assess the viability of proposals If successful you will need to pay a non-refundable fee of £1500, you will be assigned a mentor and you can then make your Tier 1 application http://www.brookes.ac.uk/business_employers/graduate-visas

10 Doctorate Extension Scheme (DES) You can apply if you have Tier 4 leave to study a PhD You can apply for leave for 12 months When submitting your thesis for examination let the Research Degrees Team (Student Central) know that you intend to apply. They will provide you with information about apply for the scheme

11 Tier 5 Youth Mobility Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Republic of Korea, Taiwan You must be 18-30, and have savings of £1,800 in your personal bank account on the date you apply. (£1,890 after 1 st July) You cannot switch into this category from the UK

12 Tier 5 – Youth Mobility What you can and can’t do You can: Study, work in most jobs or can be self-employed and set up a company You can’t: work as a professional sportsperson, doctor or dentist in training bring in family members on your application

14 Tier 5 – Temporary Worker - Government Authorised Exchange Schemes You can apply in the UK if you meet ALL the following requirements: You have Tier 4 leave Acquired your UK degree during the leave You are being sponsored to undertake a period of postgraduate training/work experience towards a professional qualification/registration or you are being sponsored for 12 months for an internship that directly relates to your UK qualification Your employer does not intend to employ you in the UK once you work experience has ended
