4 Background For more than 58 years, Egypt has benefited from the peaceful applications of atomic energy: Nuclear and radiation facilities. Research and development activities. Radiation applications and uses of radioactive sources.

5 Nuclear facilities First Research Reactor ETRR-1 (2 MW)
Second Research Reactor ETRR-2 (22 MW) Nuclear Fuel Manufacturing Pilot Plant FMPP Nuclear Fuel Research and Development Laboratory Molybdenum Production Unit Hydrometallurgy Pilot Unit Nuclear Chemistry Building Locations Outside Facilities (LOF) Currently; Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority (EAEA) owns and operate all nuclear facilities in Egypt

6 Radiation Facilities & Radioactive Sources
Two Gamma Irradiators (one in operation up to 1,000,000 Ci 60Co & one in commissioning phase; designed for 2,000,000 Ci 60Co) Radioactive Sources (different applications) Treatment of cancers, Industrial uses, Oil & Gas exploration and development Currently, over 6000 known radioactive sources are used in Egypt.

7 Embarking Nuclear Power
Egypt is going to launch its Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) Program for electricity generation. Our plan is to launch 4000 MWe by the end of Since the government declaration on October 29, 2007; several organized activities have been initiated locally and with a cooperation with IAEA (Egypt – IAEA integrated work plan) and others countries and international organizations. The minister cabinet decided in October 2013 to complete working in the Egyptian Nuclear power program.

9 EGYPTIAN Nuclear & Radiation Law
The Egyptian Nuclear and radiation Law no. 7 of 2010 was promulgated on March 29th, The Law covering safety, security, safeguards, emergency and liability for the whole peaceful applications of atomic energy. The law stipulates that all nuclear and radiation facilities, practices and activities in the Arab Republic of Egypt shall exclusively be restricted to peaceful purposes. The executive regulation of the law issued in 2011.

11 ENRRA The Law no. 7 of 2010 established an independent body known as “Egyptian Nuclear & Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA)”, having a public juridical personality, reporting to the Prime Minister, having an independent budget and centrally located in Cairo.

12 Vision To be a distinguished regulatory authority on the national, regional and international level for nuclear and radiation safety, nuclear security and safeguards

13 Mission Article (12) of the law states that “the authority shall carry out all regulatory and control works related to the nuclear or radiation activities using the atomic energy for the peaceful purposes, to ensure the security and safety of human, property and environment from the risks of exposure to ionizing radiation”.

14 ENRRA policy ENRRA’s main target is protecting individuals, property, and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. Recognizing that the priority for nuclear ad radiation safety without being influenced by economic or any other aspects. Relying on national legislation, international standards and expertise, national and international best practices in implementing its duties. Relying on transparency and credibility of the information related to nuclear and radiological activities to strengthen the public confidence and media.

Working on establishing an honest and open dialogue with licensees and maintaining the close ties with the relevant competent authorities and the relevant regional and international authorities and organizations. Working on the development of its practices and its competence performance and improvement of the nuclear and radiological regulatory requirements Working on provide all the employees’ needs, which enable them to perform their duties effectively and efficiently.

19 Objectives Pooling, analysing and sharing existing and new knowledge and information on nuclear safety, security and Safeguards. Facilitation of cooperation between Arab, regional and International nuclear bodies. Creation of human network and cyber community. Capacity building system to share knowledge and experience between regulators in Arab countries. Enhancement of nuclear safety infrastructures in Arab countries. Assuring and upgrading safety of nuclear installations in Arab countries. Provide regulatory insights to nuclear safety issues specific to Arab countries.

21 EGYPT & ANNUR Egypt is a founded member in the Arab Network for Nuclear Regulators (ANNUR) within the Arab Atomic Energy Authority (AAEA). Egypt chaired the working group on Nuclear Safety, Security and safeguards (TWG 5) and on waste management (TWG 4). Egypt is keen to participate in all the events organized under the umbrella of ANNUR to share experience and best practices.
