New Revised Specification In Construction For 1st teaching September 2009 For moderation 2011

Unit 1: Construction Industry for the 21st Century Introduction to the Built Environment Employment in the Construction Industry Economic Resource Considerations Health and Safety Construction Technology Sustainable Development One written exam Externally set and externally marked The paper lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. Unit 2: Construction Craft Project Students carry out a craft project and prepare a craft project folder. Controlled assessment. The teacher assesses the work and we moderate it. Unit 3: Computer Aided Design in Construction Students produce a portfolio of work in computer aided design. Controlled assessment. The teacher assesses the work and we moderate it.

Students must complete two controlled assessment tasks, one for Unit 2: The Construction Craft Project (20 hours) and one for Unit 3: Computer Aided Design in Construction ( 25 hours). The controlled assessment tasks are each worth 30 percent of the final mark. Teachers mark the controlled assessment tasks and we moderate them. We issue the controlled assessment tasks in September of each year. We expect students to have their work for Units 2 and 3 ready to submit in May of Year 12. Students must complete all their work (apart from research) under the teacher’s informal supervision. They may complete their research under limited supervision. Students have 5 hours to complete their portfolio and 20 hours to produce their craft project

Construction Craft Project is worth 30 percent of the final award. We award 25 percent for the project and 5 percent for any associated evidence that the students present in their portfolio. Students must: complete a suitable craft project that reflects one of the main craft occupations in the construction industry; and research and investigate their project to produce a folder containing: –the production stages (for example a flow diagram); –a costing of the project; –a description of the tools and processes used to manufacture the project –the health and safety requirements necessary in the manufacture of the project –an evaluation of their completed project. Students are allowed to complete research outside of the classroom environment. They may also work together to research information. They must, however, produce the final work for their portfolio individually and in the classroom environment.

Students must prepare a portfolio of work in computer aided design (CAD). This is worth 30 percent of the final award. The teacher assesses the portfolio, and we moderate it. Students may practise the required skills outside of the classroom environment. However, they must complete the portfolio within the classroom environment, under controlled conditions. All construction details that students present must follow the current building regulation standards and health and safety legislation. The students' presentation of all drawings must also comply with BS1192.

The moderation team released draft drawings of the assignments/projects for unit 2 GCSE construction at the start of September. Any school that has already purchased materials for these projects at that time can use the drawings that were available. A new version of the drawings are now available on the construction micro-site of CCEA’s web-site http://www.ccea.org.ukhttp://www.ccea.org.uk Should a school find it difficult to purchase materials in the sizes specified, the following is permitted by the moderation team: Schools can make changes in sizes only to the assignments/projects. However these changes must be recorded in an engineering drawing and made available during visiting moderation.
