1 Phase Change (Changes of State)
PS7: investigate & understand phase change, melting point, freezing point, boiling point, vaporization, and condensation

2 Learning Objectives: I will…
Explain what happens to states of matter as heat is added and taken away. Analyze a phase change diagram to identify the points at which melting, freezing, boiling, condensation, and evaporation occur. Language Objectives: I will… Discuss particle movement during various phase changes Write missing terms in a graphic organizer that illustrates phase changes

Copy down the following key terms in your notes. Put a * beside the ones you already know and could explain to someone else. Phase change Boiling Boiling point Melting melting point Freezing freezing point Vaporization Condensation Sublimation

4 What is the difference between temperature, heat, and thermal energy?
Discuss with a partner. I will call on a few to share with the class.

5 rEVIEW: Temperature: average kinetic energy of particles and is measured in Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin Thermal Energy: total energy of the motion of all particles in an object and depends on the temperature of an object and the number of particles in an object Heat: the transfer of thermal energy

6 States of Matter Review
Why does a substance change state?

7 What is a Phase Change? When A SUBSTANCE CHANGES FROM ONE STATE OF MATTER TO ANOTHER STATE EX: WATER TO ICE, ICE TO WATER, WATER TO WATER VAPOR When a substance changes from one state to another, it does so because of heat (added or taken away).

Description of Phase Change Term for Change Heat Solid to Liquid Melting (ice to water) + Heat Liquid to solid Freezing (water to ice) - Heat Liquid to gas Vaporization (water to water vapor) Gas to liquid Condensation (water vapor to water) Solid to gas Sublimation (dry ice to CO2)

10 Copy this chart in your notes:
+ Heat + Heat - Heat - Heat

11 sublimation melting vaporization freezing condensation

12 the change from ________________ to ________________. Freezing
Review from last class… Melting the change from ________________ to ________________. Freezing the change from _________________ to _________________. Evaporation the change from ________________ to _________________ . Condensation the change from ________________ to __________________ . Sublimation the change from _______________ to __________________

13 Phase Change Diagram

14 What happens to the temperature of a substance during a phase change?
Temperatures stay constant during phase changes. Although energy is added during melting, the energy is used to break the bonds that hold the molecules together in a solid.

15 Last class… warming cooling gas vaporization condensation liquid
melting freezing solid

16 Phase Change Diagrams (cont.)
PS7b: investigate & understand phase change, melting point, freezing point, boiling point, vaporization, and condensation

17 Language Objectives: I will…
Analyze a phase change diagram to identify the points at which melting, freezing, condensation, and vaporization occur. Review key concepts related to heat and heat transfer in order to prepare for my test. Learning Objectives: I will… Label the parts of a phase change diagram, discuss them with a partner, and write a paragraph of what is occurring on the diagram. sort vocabulary terms and definitions related to thermal energy transfer. read and discuss review questions with my group member.
