7 Turn to your “Asia or Elbow Partner” Partner A tells B: Two things you already know about Buddhism. Partner B tells A: Explain why you think one would create a beautiful rock garden and then destroy it. WARNING… Be prepared to share your partner’s answer with the class

11 Tanka Poems Oldest form of poetry in Japan Unrhymed poem of 5 lines Tanka poems capture nature’s beauty and the joys and sorrow (sadness) of life: The faintly glowing color of the maples, when it fades away before the falling of snow, serenity in mountains.

12 Haiku Poems Popularized by a man named Matsuo Basho. Haiku consisted of 3 lines of words with a total of 17 syllables (sounds of the word). Has become the most popular form of poetry in Japan: Falling to the ground, I watch a leaf settle down In a bed of brown.

13 On your own paper… Pick one of the type of poems, tanka or haiku, and then quick--draw a picture of what you envision, or see in your mind, from this poem. 14 The Tale of Genji Some believe that The Tale of Genji, written by a woman named Lady Murasaki Shikibu, is the world’s first novel, or whole book The novel is about the adventures of a Japanese prince

15 Noh Drama The oldest type of Japanese play is called Noh, created in the 1300’s Noh plays were used to teach Buddhist ideas Noh plays were performed on bare stages and the actors wore masks and elaborate robes They danced and chanted poetry to the music of the drums and flutes Actors were usually men

26 HOMEWORK You will write a poem, either Tanka or Haiku Your poem must have an illustration (colored drawing) based on the topic or theme of your poem. Remember, these types of poems are usually about nature: mountains, oceans, snow, wind, plants, the Earth. Imagine yourself somewhere in nature: sunrise, sunset, windy, cold, warm, noisy, quiet. 10 points
