5 The united Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Great Britain The official name for the country whose language we study is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In everyday use, however, the word “Britain” is quite possible. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has several different names. Some people say “Great Britain”, or Britain, or “the United Kingdom”, or just “the U.K.” and “G.B.” Great Britain is an island that lies off the north west of Europe. It is the largest island of Europe. It is 500 km wide and nearly 1,000 km long. There is the Atlantic Ocean on the north of it and the North Sea on the east. The English Channel, which is about 21 miles separates the U.K. from the continent. Its closest continental neighbors are France and Belgium. Recently the channel Tunnel, which links France and England, has been built. There are four countries in the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. England, Scotland and Wales are three main parts of Great Britain. Scotland is in the north. Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital, it is one of the most beautiful cities in Britain. Wales is in the west. The capital city of Wales is Cardiff. Ireland, which is also an island, lies off the west coast of Great Britain. Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic (Eire) are on this island. Belfast is the capital city in Northern Ireland and it is its capital.

19 Geographical position  New Zealand is an island country in the Southwest Pacific Ocean; It lies about 1,600 km southeast of Australia. New Zealand belongs a large island group called Polynesia. The country is situated on main islands - the North Island and the South Island - and save dozen smaller islands. Most of the smaller islands are hundreds kilometers from the main ones.  Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and Auckland is largest city.

20 Languages  English is the official language of New Zealand and is spoken throughout the country. Many native people speak their own language Maori, in addition to English.

26 Washington Washington is the capital of the USA. It isn’t the largest city, but it is very beautiful and has many attractions. There the Capitol the White House is the Capitol and the White House there. In the Capitol the Congress works and in the White House the President lives.

28 Children’s attractions Disneyland Disney World Island of Adventures  There are many children’s attractions in the USA. The most famous are Disneyland in California and Disney World in Florida. There is also Island of Adventures in Orlando.

30 CANADA Canada is the second biggest country in the world, but it has a population of only 30 million. It is so big that there is a variety of climates. Canada is famous for its beautiful mountains and lakes. Most people live in the south because the north is too cold. 38 Until 1901 Australia was a British colony. Now Australia is an independent federal state within the Commonwealth headed by the British Queen. The Queen is represented by Governor General. 39 There are lots of strange and unusual animals in Australia. Many of them - the kangaroo, the dingo, the koala, the echidna, the platypus - are found nowhere in the world.
