3 What is FSA? FSA stands for Florida Standards Assessment. FSA measures student achievement of the Florida Standards, which are rigorous grade-level expectations. Students will be assessed in: 1. English Language Arts (Reading) 2. Math All of M-DCPS core curriculum used within the classrooms and schools are updated with the Florida Standards. Those standards are geared towards critical thinking and deeper analysis by the students.

4 The Florida Standards -are detailed expectations of what every child should know and be able to do at each grade level; -focus on thinking critically and analytically; -establish clear and consistent guidelines for instruction; -prove more rigorous content and application of knowledge; and -will help to prepare students for success in the 21 st century.

6 FSA ELA – Reading (Grades 3-5) O 2 days of 80-minute sessions O Up to 60 items over the two sessions O Paper-based Tip: Use the SMART 7 strategies.

7 FSA English Language Arts Test O Passages are varied types of fiction and non-fiction text  50% - Informational Text  50% - Literary Text O The length and complexity of texts will vary within each grade-level assessment GradeRange of Number of Words 3100 - 700 4100 – 900 5200 – 1000 _+_+

11 Hot Text One/Two-Part Hot Text One/Two-Part – 1. Requires students to select words/phrases or sentences; 2. identify what an illustration contributes to the text; 3. select from choices; 4. select information from the text that supports your answer

12 Multi–Select Items O Multi-select items allow you to select more than one answer option O Different from multiple- choice items, which allow you to select only one response. Tip: The question will typically state “select all that apply.”

13 Hot Text Part A: How has learning from distant places changed over time? A. Students can ask questions and get answers fasters. B. Students can hear their teacher during the same class time. C. Students use the mail to receive and send work. D. Students live far apart from their classmates. Part B: Select one sentence that supports the answer in Part A. A. “The student can live in one country, and the teacher can be located in a different country.” B. “All the children could hear their teacher at the same time, but they were hundreds of miles apart.” C. “They got their lessons in the mail, did their homework, and mailed it back to the teacher.” D. “Everyone can see and hear everything that’s being said as it happens.” E. “Sometimes, they don’t have to have a class where everyone is together all at once.”

15 Multi-Select With which two sentences would the author agree? A. Learning is exciting no matter how you do it. B. All students should go to school on the Internet. C. Thousands of students in the same class are too many. D. Online classrooms are a good alternative to regular ones. E. Students in the same class should live close to each other.

16 Close Read Item O The close read items will include O Three- or four- paragraph passages O Five to six grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors O Students will edit the three- or four- paragraph passage for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors by choosing a correct answer to replace the error. O The word(s) or phrases to be edited will be identified in the passage

Offer positive support to your child Encourage your child to RELAX and do his/her best Take advantage of online resources Ask your child to tell you about the books he/she is reading or the math concepts he/she is learning Get a good night’s sleep before all testing days Eat a good breakfast on mornings of tests Be at school every day, all day and on time!!

24 Outstanding Questions O When student scores will be received, FSA website currently states June 2016. O What is to be considered a “passing” score? O How the third grade retention law will be implemented?

25 Promotion to 4 th Grade A student may be promoted to grade 4 if the student demonstrates reading mastery through one of the following: 1. Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) – English Language Arts score of Level 2 or higher, 2. Grade 3 Reading Student Portfolio – performance on each grade 3 Language Arts Florida Standards rated as acceptable, 3. ELA students with 2 years or less in the ESOL program.
