2 What is Culture Culture - Culture is the way of life of a group of people who share similar beliefs and customs. Greek Celebration

3 Cultural Groups Social Groups – Groups of people that make up a society. Most groups have rules of behavior that group members learn. Socialization – The process by which people adjust their behavior to meet these rules.

4 Types of Cultural Groups Ethnic Groups – A group that shares a language, history, religion, and some physical traits.

5 Cultural Groups - Language Language is one of the strongest unifying forces for a culture. Dialect – is a local form of a language that may have a distinct vocabulary and pronunciation.

6 Cultural Groups - Religion Another important cultural element is religion. Religious beliefs and practices have helped some people answers basic questions about life’s meaning. Major World Religions Buddhism Christianity Hinduism Islam Judaism

7 Cultural Groups - History History shapes how a culture views itself and the world. Stories about the challenges and successes of a culture support certain values and help people develop cultural pride and unity. Cultural holidays mark important events and enable people to celebrate their heritage.

8 Cultural Groups – Daily Life Daily life is how a culture lives on a daily basis. The type of food you eat, and how you eat it (forks, chopsticks, or hands) The home you live in The clothes you wear Your family and friends Can all reflect your culture and your physical surroundings

9 Cultural Groups - Arts Through music, painting, sculpture, dance and literature, people express what they think is beautiful and meaningful. The arts can also tell stories about important figures and events in culture.

10 Cultural Groups - Government Types of Government Democracy – A government in which power is held by the people. (The USA & most western countries) (Parliamentary) Dictatorship – A government by which the leader or dictator rules by the use of force. (North Korea) Monarchy – A government led by a king or queen who inherits power by being born into the ruling family. (Saudi Arabia)

11 Cultural Groups - Economics Economic System – is a system that sets rules for deciding what goods and services to produce, how to produce them, and who will receive them. Market Economy – A system in which the production and distribution of goods and services take place through the mechanism of free markets guided by a free price system. (USA) Supply & Demand Command Economy – A system in which the government decides how resources are used and what goods and services are produced. (China) Government Dictates Prices & Wages
