The Nervous System Nate Martin Candace Young

The Nervous System The nervous system consists of the brain, brainstem, ears, eyes, olfactory cells, nerves, taste buds, and the spinal cord The nervous system works with the skeletal system because the skull helps protect the brain. More specifically the cerebrum.

The Brain The brain controls every aspect of your life. It is arguably the most important organ, right next to the heart. Without one lung, or one kidney, you can still live. Death in the medical sense is lack of brain function. (Reference; William Martin, M.D.)

Brain Stem The brainstem controls your most basic functions/ reflexes -smiling -blinking - swallowing - breathing A patient of Lynette K. Martin, M.D. – born without a brain - Only a brain stem She is currently 10 years old, but has the body of a 6 year old. Brain Video

Ears The ears contain structures for both the sense of hearing and the sense of balance. There are 3 bones in the ear; -malleus -incus -stapes Loudness is measured in decibels (db), the force of sound waves against the ear. The louder the sound, the more decibels.

Eye The human eye is about 2.5 centimeters in length Weighs about 7 grams Light passes through the cornea, pupil and lens before hitting the retina The iris is a muscle that controls the size of the pupil, and therefore, the amount of light that enters the eye. The color of your eye is also determined by the iris

Taste Buds Taste buds are sensory organs located on your tongue that allow you to experience the taste that are sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. More specifically, taste buds are found in the bumps called papillae all over your tongue. The average person has over 10,000 taste buds, and they are replaced every 2 weeks

Spinal Cord The spinal cord is the main pathway from the brain to the rest of the body The length of the spinal cord is much shorter than the length of the bone spinal column If ruptured, a person is almost always paralyzed.

Olfactory Cells These cells help the olfactory system detect food There are more than 100 million of these cells in the nasal cavity
