WLTP-08-12 1 01.11.2014 OIL #6, section 2 Use of the gearbox, auxiliary gearboxes, exception of crawler gears

Detailed issue descriptions 2 OIL #6, use of the gearbox, required data can be split into the following subsections: 1.Add requirements, how to deal with vehicles with a two range transmission (low and high), 2.Introduce the possibility to exclude crawler gears from the gear use calculation. With respect to #1 the TF proposes to add a new subsection 1.4 to section 1 of annex 1 as follows: 1.4 For vehicles equipped with a two range transmission (low and high), only the range designed to normal on road operation is considered for the gear use determination. This proposal should be adopted at WLTP IG #8.

Exclusion of auxiliary gears 3 Issue #2 is still under discussion. The crawler gear is an occasional use gear for heavily laden conditions, steep hill starts or maintaining a very slow controlled speed when laden. A crawler gear is very similar to the ‘low range’ transfer boxes used on off road vehicles (see issue #1). The main problem is to define delimination criteria for the crawler gears and the 1. gear for normal operation, that are performance based rather than design based. Special attendance has to be drawn to prohibit, that the requirements enable to skip the 1. gear for high powered sports cars.

Exclusion of auxiliary gears 4 The first proposal from Ford was based on pull away requirements for the gross trailer mass (GTM) and 50% of GTM and on a borderline for the ratio between engine speed and vehicle speed for the crawler gear. The 1. gear would be a crawler gear and the 2. gear would be the 1. gear for the WLTP gear use calculation, if the following requirements are fulfilled: 1.The vehicle with the trailer, both fully laden (GTM), cannot pull away at an incline of 20% in 2. gear within 4 s, 2.The vehicle laden to 50% GTM or unladen mass + 27% maximum payload, whichever the higher, is able to pull away at an incline of 20% in 2. gear within 4 s,

Exclusion of auxiliary gears 5 3.The vehicle speed in 1. gear at 75% of rated engine speed < 20 km/h. JASIC made a counter proposal with similar pull away criteria, but based on 28% of GTM. Since the discussion was controversially in the TF, it was agreed that Ford and JASIC should continue informal discussions, including other interested members of the TF and should come back to the TF once a compromise would be achieved. In addition to that, the transmission based criterion (3 rd bullet point) needs to be amended in order to cover also class 1 and 2 vehicles.

Exclusion of auxiliary gears 6 The TF concluded that more time for further discussions is needed, the chairman should ask for an extension of the timeframe (till end of February 2015) for this issue at WLTP IG #8.
