Dr. Izzo asked 15,000 people in the U.S. and Canada to recommend a person who they believe had lived a long life and had something important to teach us about living. 235 of these recommended people were interviewed and all asked the same questions. The 5 secrets come from the analysis of common themes in their answers.

Youth is a wonderful thing. It is a pity it is wasted on the young. - George Bernard Shaw

#1 – Be True to Yourself You must follow your heart and your dreams, not the dreams someone else has for you. This may mean making a radical change in your life, or simply making small adjustments. The key to continually examining your life is to make sure you are following your own true path.

#1 – Be True to Yourself Questions to ask yourself: Was I the kind of person I want to be today, or this week? What would make tomorrow or next week feel more true to myself?

The unexamine d life is not worth living. -- Socrates If you don't reflect on your life and values, and instead are merely "going through the motions," then there's an important sense in which your life is not even really yours. Experiences happen to you, for better or worse, and may trigger a reaction. However, you are no more than a cog in the machine of the universe until you stop and question your own drives and actions. Then, you need to reshape your character into a mold of your own devising, and thereby craft a life that makes sense to you as you live it.

Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power. If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich. --Tao Te Ching

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind. --Dr. Seuss

#2 – Leave No Regrets Everyone has some regrets, but people who had the fewest were the happiest. People don’t regret risks that failed; instead they regret not having risked more. What often determines our happiness in life is how we handle set-backs in our life.

#2 – Leave No Regrets Questions to ask yourself: Did I act on my convictions this week? How am I responding to the setbacks in my life right now? Am I stepping forward or retreating?

Whenever one wise woman had a big decision to make in her life she asked herself the following question: When I am an old woman sitting in my rocking chair thinking about my life, what decision will I have wished I had made?

#3 – Become Love The more you focus on acting with love, the more you will find happiness. This begins with choosing to love yourself and breaking away from thoughts that are self-defeating and self-critical. You must make loving relationships a priority in your life. Show kindness and compassion for all you meet.

#3 – Become Love Questions to ask yourself: Did I make room for friends, family and relationships today or this week? Was I kind and loving to the people closest to me? Did I spread love and kindness in the world at each interaction?

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. -- the Dalai Lama

“Do not consider any act of kindness insignificant, even meeting your brother with a cheerful face.” -- the Koran

An old Navajo grandfather told his grandson that there is sometimes inside of him a fight between two wolves. One is evil – full of anger, envy, sorrow, greed, regret, and arrogance. The other is good – full of joy, serenity, love, hope, humility, and empathy. The grandson thought awhile and asked his grandfather which wolf wins the fight. The grandfather replied, “the wolf that I choose to feed.”

#4 – Live the Moment We must always live in the present moment – the only moment in which we have any power. If you don’t live in the present, you let yesterday or tomorrow steal today’s happiness. Try to find the joy and beauty in everything you do.

#4 – Live the Moment Questions to ask yourself: Did I fully enjoy whatever I was doing this day/week? Did I take time to enjoy the little, simple things today, or did I simply run through the day’s agenda? What am I grateful for right now?

#5 – Give More Than You Take Each day you have the power to give without limit, but you can’t control what you get. Giving connects people to something larger than themselves, and gives our life purpose. The happiest people are those least focused on themselves.

#5 – Give More Than You Take Questions to ask yourself: Did I make the world a better place this week in some small way? Was I kind, generous, and giving this week? Did I remind myself that I am making a difference this week?

An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity. -- Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Last Secret It’s never too late to begin to live the secrets. When you follow these secrets and focus on living your life, you will focus less or not at all on judging your life. A judging mind paralyzes us because it can give us a false sense of perfection or a sense of inadequacy. It’s not too late to......
