Items are executed in dark tones of coloring and the faces are not well defined. There are numbers noted on the verso of both items, 2 on Hamlet and 11 on All's Well. Both items are signed in lower right corner. Hamlet measures 10 x 14 in. and All's well 8 1/2 x 12 in. Hamlet is pictured center and the queen is seated at right. A vague figure of Polonius can be seen behind the curtain at left. The drawing of All's well is labeled Act V, Sc. III and titled 'Lafeu and The King'. It pictures a man with white hair and beard seated center and writing. A man with a long red cape stands left of him and a woman stands behind the chair of the elder man and is glancing at the younger man in the red cape. Call Number (Hamnet) ART Box S666 no.1 (size L)

Notes (Hamnet) Artist: Attribution taken from bookseller and initials on one item. Notes (Hamnet) Collection title devised by cataloger. Notes (Hamnet) Drawings have all been removed from backings - previously one item was hinged to a backing and enclosed in a mat, the other four were glued to their backings. All five backings were labeled in pencil with the play title. The hinged item had the artist's name in pencil on verso along with a penciled note 'no' and some rough pencil sketches of figures. Most of the drawings are executed with wide brush strokes and some have white opaque or tempera on their surface. The drawing for Merchant of Venice has some ink outlining and is labeled and signed in pencil on the surface though most of the signature has been clipped. The other four items are unsigned. Measurements vary. Notes (Hamnet) History: The rough drawing of Antony and Cleopatra is similar in design to a finished watercolor by Wright which is much smaller in size (ART Box W951 no.79 - cataloged with 'Illustrations to Shakespeare - small rectangle series'). Of the 200 or so watercolors by Wright in the FSL collection, the rough drawing for Pericles which is part of this group is the only item illustrating that play. Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: ART Box W951 no.120 was formerly part of ART Inventory 286 (no.23), see entry under Wright for 'Comedy and tragedy' for provenance information. ART Box W951 no.121,122,123,124 were formerly part of ART Inventory 289 (no.58,113,40,80), see entry under Wright for 'Masquerade' for provenance information. Notes (Hamnet) Subject: Drawings depict the following: Pericles, Prince of Tyre - four women standing and a soldier (ART Box W951 no.120) ; The tempest - Ferdinand and Miranda seated on a log with Prospero watching in the background (ART Box W951 no.121) ; Hamlet - Hamlet and the Ghost with Horatio and Marcellus at left, Act I, Sc. 4 (ART Box W951 no.122) ; Merchant of Venice - the court room scene (ART Box W951 no.123) ; Antony and Cleopatra - the death of Antony (ART Box W951 no.124). Nos. 121-123 have additional pencil sketches on the reverse, 121 and 123 are unrecognizable scenes, 122 depicts Bottom in his first appearance with the donkey's head. Two of the items have penciled numbers in the bottom right corner, '63' and '67' (ART Box W951 no.48 & 50). Several drawings have additional sketches on verso: no.36 and no.38 have scenes from Merry Wives of Windsor; no.37 has an unidentifiable scene; no. 39 has a rough pencil sketch of Lear & Cordelia; no.40 has a rough pencil sketch of an arm; no.42 and no.44 each have an unidentified scene; no.47 has a pencil, ink, and sepia wash drawing of unidentified scene; no.48 has a pencil and ink wash of unidentified scene. Notes (Hamnet) History: Drawings are similar in size and shape to a series of finished watercolors by Wright in the Folger collection [cataloged under Wright as 'Illustrations to Shakespeare - group scenes (tableaux)']. Most of the rough studies, however, have more action taking place in them than the finished pieces and for the most part their subjects are taken from different plays. The one exception is the rough study for Titus Andronicus which closely matches the design of the finished watercolor illustrating the same play. These rough studies may have been intended as designs for the completion of the finished watercolor series or for a separate series altogether. Since the rough drawings were purchased together and are all approximately the same size and in a similar state of completion it seems likely that they were intended for the same purpose. They may possibly have been done for a commission or intended for book illustration though there is no evidence of publication. Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: Items were formerly part of ART Inventory 289 (no.27,35,37,42,52,55,59,61,73,75,81,83,85,94,117 - Case 889) see entry under Wright for Masquerade for provenance information. Notes (Hamnet) Subject: Drawings are not labeled as to act and scene but, where obvious, information has been supplied. These designs are much less contrived than the finished watercolor group scenes and seem to be intending more to illustrate action from the play than to exhibit characters. The following plays are illustrated: Taming of the shrew - Induction, Sc. 2 (ART Box W951 no.36) ; King Henry VIII - with Ann Bullen (no.37) ; King Henry IV, pt. 1 - Act II, Sc. 2 (no.38, labeled Merry wives) ; King Lear - Death of Cordelia (no.39) ; King Lear (no.40,41) ; Hamlet - Act V, Sc. 2 (no.42) ; Macbeth (no.43) ; The tempest - Act I, Sc. 2 (no.44,45) ; Othello (no.46) ; [Richard III] (no.47, labeled Henry IV) ; Timon of Athens (no.48) ; Titus Andronicus - Act V, Sc. 3 (no.49) ; Henry IV (no.50). Notes (Hamnet) Artist: The drawings illustrating Taming of the shrew and Henry IV, pt. 1 (ART Box W951 no.36 & 38) are somewhat similar in design to paintings of the same subjects by Robert Smirke (see entry under Wright for 'Drawings in the fashion of Smirke'). Notes (Hamnet) All but one or two of the drawings were glued to a backing, which has since been removed (with the exception of the items bound in ART Vol. d98, some of which are still matted). Most of these backings bore a J. Whatman watermark, and some the watermark date of 1830. On all but four there was at least the remnant of a brown ink script reading 'M. Wright', with a flourish along the top of it. This signature, which may not be in the hand of Wright, was found along the edge of the backing versos and is often severly clipped leaving only the flourish. Most of the items had pencil markings, numbers and/or letters, on the backings. One item is signed on the drawing itself (ART Box W951 no.28). The backings for all but one of the items were labeled as to play and almost all include the act and scene division as well as a quotation, usually written in brown ink in Roman style capitals with an italic hand. These labels have been saved and are encapsulated in mylar along with the drawings themselves. Notes (Hamnet) Collection title devised by cataloger. Notes (Hamnet) History: These 16 watercolors appear to have been done as a series (with the possible exception of ART Box W951 no.35), probably around the same time period and possibly for a commission. Most of the items are similarly mounted and labeled which seems to verify this assumption. Unfortunately the items were not all acquired at the same time and provenance information is limited. It is possible that the drawings were intended for book illustrations though there is no evidence of publication. Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: ART Box W951 no.22-32 were formerly part of ART Inventory 289 (no.2-10,19,22), a collection of 122 Shakespearean watercolors, most of which were attributed to Wright. The collection was purchased from a private owner by 'Sabin' c. 1898 and sold to the Folgers by Gabriel Wells, April 28, 1920 (Cs. 889). ART Box W951 no.33 was formerly part of ART Inv. 286 (no.17), see record for 'Comedy and tragedy' under Wright for prov. information. ART Box W951 no.34 was purchased separately from Maggs Bros., Aug. 1925. Maggs identified the scene as being from King Lear, here it is listed as an ill. for All's well (Cs. 1452). ART Box W951 no.35 was purchased by the library in April 1947 from C.A. Stonehill (see letter in acc. file, Apr. 17, 1947). It is possible that this watercolor does not belong to this set of illustrations. ART Vol. d98 no.7-11 are part of a bound volume, for prov. see entry for 'Atkinson, John Augustus, Scenes from King Henry V... '. Notes (Hamnet) Subject: Drawings all represent a scene from the fifth act of the play they are illustrating. Regardless of the number of characters included in the scene in the text Wright has contrived to portray at least all the major characters and some of the minor characters. Each item pictures between 11 and 18 figures in tableau. The following plays are illustrated: Merchant of Venice (ART Box W951 no.22) ; As you like it (no.23) ; Love's labour's lost (no.24) ; Titus Andronicus (no.25) ; Taming of the shrew (no.26) ; Pericles (no.27) ; Measure for measure (no.28) ; Othello (no.29) ; Troilus and Cressida (no.30) ; Twelfth night (no.31 & 33, no.33 is labeled on verso as Winter's tale, backing label is correct) ; Tempest (no.32) ; All's well (no.34 and ART Vol. d98 no.11) ; King Richard II (no.35) ; and Much ado (ART Vol. d98 no.7).
