There is a strong desire to be able to provide credible and influential advice to decision makers about the condition of the asset and investment required, and the trade-offs that have or need to be made. Providing this information requires asset managers to have the right data and measures, as well as the confidence to say they don’t know. Data standards – why?

Service Risk Maintenance Investment Time Driving Efficiencies Managing effectiveness Asset Management Optimisation We need higher quality asset information to enable credible evidence based decisions on investment/service risk trade-offs Can we get it right(er)? Less art more science

Data standard – so what does Meta-Data-Standard mean? From Wikipedia: Metadata standards are requirements which are intended to establish a common understanding of the meaning or semantics of the data, to ensure correct and proper use and interpretation of the data by its owners and users.

Data standard – an example What information about the settings etc…when the photo was taken do we capture? What are the allowed values? Both questions need to be answered for a standard to work

Analogue: What do we need to know about this Tunnel?

And how do we make it work?

Working together using

Getting the Foundation right, “As Built” then working up the information value chain

So far we have… Worked on adopting and expanding the standard for use in NZ Started work on organising governance to support wider use of the standard Compared the standard to alternatives

But we have work to do… Make sure we can keep on using the standard once we commit to it We need more then just a paper standard, what else? We are covering “as built”; we need to expand the standard How do we go about rolling out the standard?

Timelines? We are now working on the details and a roll out plan We would expect to be able to say more about timeframes by the middle of this year…

Is there something in this for you? Yes, The standard should be fit for purpose for NZ inc… Authorities and Supply chain

Questions? …is it too late for input, questions, comments, criticism etc…? Not at all: -Ask now or -Email me on: haydn.read@wcc.govt.nzhaydn.read@wcc.govt.nz
