Experiences and information presented in this paper represent the prevailing water usage and awareness issues of other Indian metropolitan cities as well as the cities of other developing countries. Benefits &Outcomes

Research Methodology 5 The research design is exploratory and data for the research is collected through questionnaire method. The sample size for the research is 880 which is collected using Cluster sampling technique from residents of apartments in Bengaluru. The city is divided into four clusters viz. North, South, East and West and data will be collected from 220 samples from each cluster. The data is analyzed using SPSS and various hypothesis are tested using t-test, chi square and cross tab is used to find out the various pattern of the people regarding consumption of water. Data is presented in graphs and tables.

Findings 6 The number of male respondents are 54% and female respondents are 46% of the total sample under study. Around 50% of the respondents in the city consume bore well water except Bangalore west. Around 40% of the respondents survive on piped water while a sizable population of slightly over 10% are dependent on water cans. Maximum number of respondents i.e. 35.5% use bucket & mug for washing the car and 20.7% of the respondents use pipe water for washing the car. A major set of people has not answered because they don’t wash the car as it is washed by their servants.

7 The maximum number of respondents use water for flushing toilet purpose in the household. The other 2 major purposes are hand basin and washing machine is also a considerable source of water usage. Shower comes next while bath tub, geyser and dish washer are least used purpose for water usage. There is no association between the gender of the respondent and the awareness about potability of water among the respondents. Awareness about potability of drinking water is highest in Bangalore west i.e. 68% reported agree and 7% strongly agree and Bangalore north stands second and Bangalore east and south 3rd and 4th respectively. Findings cont……

8 There is significant difference between the actual consumption and standard consumption of water among the apartment residents with respect to toilet flushing, bathing and washing utensils. There is no significant difference between the gender of the respondent and the concern for testing the potability of water. Some household activities, like washing clothes, bathing, use in toilets, and washing dishes and utensils are the most intensive water consuming activities in the cities. Majority of the respondents reported that they have not received any public information on water conservation.
