Introduction  Properties of SiO2  Characters of Soda-lime glass  Safety and first aid

Properties of SiO2

 Silica is most commonly found in nature as quartz, as well as in various living organisms.  Silica is one of the most complex and most abundant families of materials, existing both as several minerals and being produced synthetically.  Notable examples include fused quartz, crystal, fumed silica, silica gel, and aerogels.  Applications range from structural materials to microelectronics to components used in the food industry. Properties of SiO2

Characters of Soda-lime glass

 Can be chemically tempered to increase mechanical strength.  Can be heat strengthened or heat tempered to increase thermal shock resistance and mechanical strength.  Can be bent, laminated, machined, optically coated, chemically etched, sandblasted or colored.  Good flatness and surface quality due to float process.  Economically Priced.

Safety and first aid  Glassware Safety  Heating Safety  Fist aid after injury

Glassware Safety 1. When inserting glass tubing into a rubber stopper, apply a lubricant to the glass and use a twisting motion. 2. To cut glass tubing, first lay the tube on the lab table and make a scratch in it with a file. 3. Then pick up the tube with the scratch facing away from you, put your thumbs together on the opposite side as the scratch, and break the tube with both hands. 4. If you cut glass tubing, always fire polish the broken ends to remove jagged edges.

Heating Safety 1. When heating a test tube, move it around slowly over the flame to distribute the heat evenly. 2. Heat glassware by placing it on a wire gauze platform on a ringstand. Do not hold it in your hand. 3. When lighting a burner, wait until a match is struck or the striker is in place before you turn on the gas. 4. Never leave a burner or hotplate unattended.

First aid after injury Injury: Burns To do: Immediately flush with cold water until burning sensation is lessened. Injury: Cuts, Bruises To do: Do not touch an open wound without safety gloves. Pressing directly on minor cuts will stop bleeding in a few minutes. Apply cold compress to bruises to reduce swelling.

Materials  Glass tube ( 유리관 )  Triangular File ( 삼각줄 )  Flame burner ( 연소기 )

Methods  1. Glassware Cutting  2. Glassware Bending  3. Glassware Pulling

Methods

Glass Cutting 1 2  1. Score the tube once with a triangular file. 2. Place your thumbs opposite the scratch.

Glass Cutting 3 The cut end.  3. Apply pressure and snap the tubing with a quick motion.

Glass Cutting 4  4. Trim the sharp ends of the glass with a triangular file.

Glass Cutting 5  5. Rotate the tube in a laboratory burner flame until the edges are rounded.

Glass Cutting 6  6. Broaden the hole in this end of the tubing by rotating the triangular file in the melted portion.

Glass Bending  1. Use a flame spreader on the laboratory burner. Roll the tube back and forth in the flame until glass becomes soft.  2. Remove from the flame and hold for a few seconds until the heat is evenly distributed.  3. Bend quickly and hold until the glass hardens.

Glass Drawing  1. Place the wing top on the burner and adjust the flame.  2. Hold the tubing in the flame as you did in the previous section, rotating the tubing to evenly heat it.  3. When it appears soft, remove if from the flame and stretch it apart until the center of the tubing becomes a fine filament.  4. Let it cool on your asbestos pad.  5. Cut the thin portion of the tubing and fire-polish both ends.
