3 17-18 December 2013 LARP VTF Workshop BNL Proposal 3 Existing Cryogenic Equipment 1.CTI Model 4000 helium refrigerator. —Capable of producing 320 Liters/hr of liquid helium in conjunction with the wet expander. 2.Koch Model 1600 wet expander. 3.Mycom 800hp. 2 stage helium compressor. 4.2200 ACFM vacuum pump (2 stage). 5.1.8 K Service Cryostat. —(Designed for ILC 100W heat load through 10M transfer line.) 6.10,000 L liquid He storage dewar. 7.711mm dia, Vertical test dewar (6.1m long).

4 BNL MAGNET TEST FACILITY 4 CTI MODEL 4000 REFRIGERATOR/LIQUEFIER Primary source of liquefaction 1500 W at 4.5K Two reciprocating expansion engines rated at 250 rpm. He liquefaction: 320 L/hr (with both expansion engines and a Koch Model 1600 Wet Expander) Recently upgraded with a new LiN 2 heat exchanger and diagnostics for expanders BNL CRYOGENICS SYSTEM

8 17-18 December 2013 LARP VTF Workshop BNL Proposal 8 System Description 1.The refrigerator (along with the Mycom compressor and the wet expander) will be used to supply the test dewar and service cryostat with 4.5 K liquid helium. 2.The 1.8 K heat exchanger is contained in the service cryostat, this is connected to the test dewar by a 6 meter long transfer line. 3.The vacuum pump is connected to the service cryostat to provide a 2.7g/s capacity @.016 bar. (1.8 K).

11 17-18 December 2013 LARP VTF Workshop BNL Proposal 11 Transfer Line Temperature Rise Using the method demonstrated in LHC Project Report 125 (Superfluid Helium As A Technical Coolant) the temperature rise (above 1.8K) through the transfer line was calculated. 1.For a 10W heat load at the dewar the temp. rise would be <.003K 2.For a 40W heat load at the dewar the temp. rise would be.16K

12 17-18 December 2013 LARP VTF Workshop BNL Proposal 12 Summary The total estimated heat load to 1.9K 1.97W +5.476W = 7.446 Watts (steady state) 9.296 Watts (dynamic) This is well within the capacity of our existing equipment which would be about 40 Watts.
