Definition: gain of > 0.6 ACCESS for ELLS composite proficiency level score 59% AMAO 2 Annual increases in the number or percentage of children attaining English proficiency. Definition: ACCESS for ELLs composite proficiency score of > 4.5 on a Tier B or C assessment or Kindergarten assessment 24% AMAO 3 Adequate yearly progress (AYP) for LEP students. AYP Targets

Title III AMAO Improvement Plan Requirement  If the State Educational Agency (SEA) determines, based on AMAOs, that an eligible entity has failed to make progress toward meeting such objectives for two consecutive years, the agency shall require the entity to develop an improvement plan that will ensure the entity meets such objectives. Title III 3122 (b)(2)  If the SEA determines that an eligible entity has failed to meet AMAOs described in subsection (a), for four consecutive years, the agency shall—  require such entity to modify the curriculum, program, and method of instruction, or  (i) make a determination whether the entity shall continue to receive funds related to the entity’s failure to meet such objectives; and (ii) require such entity to replace educational personnel relevant to the entity’s failure to meet such objectives. ESOL Professional Learning Community New Event  WIDA Standards in Action- Lesson Planning Workshop  June 12 (PaTTAN Harrisburg) and June 14 (PaTTAN Pittsburgh)  This workshop provides an in-depth opportunity to apply the ELD standards to classroom instruction. Participants will explore the importance of creating and using learner profiles for planning lessons that include content and language development and apply these ideas to their specific educational settings.  We are encouraging teams or pairs of ESL/content area teachers to attend this session, but all who work with ELLs will benefit. Participants can bring content area lessons that they would like to differentiate for English language learners across the proficiency levels.  Check the calendar and the event listing in the forums for more information!

ELL Overlay Project  ELL Overlay Revisions  We are in the process of correlating the ELL Overlay to PA Common Core Standards, revising based on current curriculum frameworks, highlighting academic language demands, and keeping cognitive function and rigor across strands of MPI  Workgroup has been meeting in person and virtually  Making progress! Will roll out changes and PD regarding the new documents at this year’s ELL Symposium  Future Overlay work will include a series of webinars on the components and Academic Language- more information to follow!

CCIU ELL Symposium  Embracing the Challenges and Opportunities of Common Core August 5-7, 2013 Chester County Intermediate Unit Downingtown, Pa.  Day 1 PDE: lays the ground work for embracing PA Common Core with several in depth sessions geared toward novices and veterans in the ELL field. Day 2 WIDA: continues the discussion with a focus on strategies for engaging students in activities that assume high levels of proficiency with Academic Language across the content areas. Another presenter joins us to address assessing ELLs in the content areas.
