Purpose Design a web unit appropriate in or out of the classroom. Break from the traditional methods of teaching. Add technology to SOL’s. Make learning interactive and fun for students.

Design a web unit appropriate in or out of the classroom. Allows all students to access classroom info. (sick, homebound, vacationing, inclement weather….) Engages eager as well as shy students due to comfortable setting. Allows students to interact with one another without worrying about class periods or time. Allows teacher to work one on one with student or with students groups. Includes resources that are not available in classrooms like pictures, virtual field trips and additional resources.

Break from the traditional methods of teaching. Students have access to notes, worksheets and assignments in advance if they want to work ahead. Breaks the read, lecture, notes, test cycle. Allows teacher to add clip art and graphics that enhance standard print documents. Takes in to consideration the students interest and experience with technology. Encourages seasoned veterans to continue improving their teaching methods and technology skills.

Add technology to SOL’s. Makes required objectives more interesting. Covers material in a timely fashion. Easy to add extra practice and additional assessment. Encourages students to move past essential knowledge and to explore “what ifs” Provides proof that material was covered in class.

Make learning interactive and fun for students. Students work as well as teacher. Students become responsible for their success as well each others success. Students are excited to learn and create materials. Students learn how to use technology in a responsible way. Grades improve as a result of a new method that can be used for all learning levels… What student doesn’t enjoy having fun while learning?

Interactivity in Cold War Unit Discussion Board Live Chat Nuclear Blast Mapper Collier’s Panic Quiz Virtual tour of the Greenbrier

Assessment in Cold War Unit Students are assessed in a variety of methods that will allow for all levels of students to be successful. Multiple Choice, Timelines, Graphic Organizers, Web Quest, Correct Order, Short Answer, Matching and Essay. Students are assessed within each lesson, at the end of each lesson, at the end of unit and by a final project.

Lesson Plans Each lesson was designed around VA SOL Each Lesson includes step by step instruction that is the same for student and teacher. Each lesson introduces objective, includes an activity and is used in an assignment before assessment is given. Lessons were adapted to be used with current pacing guide.

Programs used….. Adobe PDF: maps, worksheets, readings, scanned documents Power Point: lecture notes were adapted to include graphics, also used for review of material and introduction of material. Microsoft Word: Venn Diagrams and map locations and questions. Front Page: Web Design Blackboard: Assessment, Chat, Digital Drop Box and Discussion Board.

Blooms Taxonomy Knowledge is used through assessment, power point notes, and assignments. Comprehension is addressed through discussion board. Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation are addressed in the final Cold War Web Quest project. **Higher level competence may be difficult with learning disabled and some survey level students.

Tomei Taxonomy classifications are addressed through the completion of The Cold War Unit Web. Examples included the use of the computer, printer, different programs, assignments, and assessments. Decision-Making is briefly addressed in the Cold War Web Quest Project. Tech-ology is briefly addressed in chat room rules. This is a neat way to evaluate lessons that incorporate technology!

Project ·Cold War Web Quest ·Students will create an exhibit for the Smithsonian in collaborative groups.

Problems incurred with creation Formatting Shared Borders Saving pages as web sites Adding Banner Making graphics stay where you want them PDF scanned documents printing too large and not in entirety Fitting lessons on one page Making pages creative Accessing e-mail address browser and preview.

Wishful Thinking….If there were more time….. ·Interactive Power Points ·Review Jeopardy before unit assessment. ·Scrolling Banner ·Picture of myself on Teacher Page. ·Documents created in Adobe. ·Better assessment at the end of each lesson. ·Detailed Cold War Web Quest instructions for teacher and student. ·More detailed directions for each lesson.
