UNDERSTANDING THE CONTENT

Media The media hosted on this site includes, mainly text and some sections on html graphics which as the title suggests are images.

The message This site is communicating the right to free education and etc. They support this message with the ease of access to all of the lessons on their site. The digital media supports this message because the media they use, text-based lessons, help the end user learn how to code web pages and other programs. Since they also have a code editor that opens in a new tab with most lessons with code snippets already in them to see how it works right in your browser, and this also lets you play around with the code a bit to see what you can do and how you can do it as well.

TOOLS & TECHNIQUES

Software & Techniques used The software used would probably have been paid software, I came to this conclusion because of how many lines of code there are on the homepage & the way that all the stylesheets and script sheets are internally written on the page and not stored on external files. There is also very little white-space in the code itself making it rather difficult to read, and since it isn’t commented at all either. A technique used was internal stylesheets and javascript, this is achieved by using the tags and the tags. While this can make the load time faster in a single page website, it doesn’t really help all that much with multi-page websites. However since the homepage has a different style than the rest of the pages in this case, it does make it faster to load.

Software & Techniques used The use of paid software helps with how the site is produced, with some IDEs like dreamweaver for example is just drag and drop that writes the code for you in the background which is easy for non-professionals. Since this site was obviously written by professionals in the sense that they host a large number of tutorials listing what the main web development languages are and how to write and understand them, you can figure that they have a rather good understanding themselves. The use of paid software in this site would help organize their work-flow and help to sort out issues with their code as well. Along with making it potentially easier to read and edit. With the use of internal stylesheets and script sheets this enhances the load time of the pages but it hinders the development process because the developers then have to edit every single file individually to update a line of javascript eliminating a bug for example. In my opinion they could make the process a lot easier by using external files so they would only need to update very few files instead of every single page and then they can just link them into the html pages

DESIGN

Design The homepage of w3schools is laid out to make it very easy to see and navigate, they have a navigation menu along the left of the screen which the user can toggle to make the main site bigger, they also have another more complete navigation menu along the top of the page underneath the header. In the center of the page they have snippets of code beside the heading and explanation of the language with easy access to the lessons, the snippets of code have examples in them to show the user the syntax and how the code is written and it also has a button leading to an online code editor so you can write your own.

How the design of the page supports the message

ETHICS

Ethics The home page of w3schools is a good example of ethical web design, there isn’t any illegal content on this site, everything is family friendly and easy to understand, and everything is very easily accessible making it very easy for teenagers/young children to navigate the site (if young children were interested in programming).

The importance of ethics Ethical considerations are very important in this site, because it’s an educational site the content has to be easily understandable and easily accessible. The creators of w3schools did a good job with this because of the way everything is accessible from the homepage and their lessons are very easy to understand but still manage to explain everything well. Since with most lessons they also have a code editor that opens in a new tab so you can try out what you are learning in real time this helps with the sites purpose a lot. Ethics are important for any site to consider because if your site is a very messy site with no clear navigation menu making the user go to great lengths to navigate throughout the site, it can and will put a lot of people off making them go to other sites that also have what they’re looking for in a nicer presentation thus making you lose out on a large number of customers/ visitors. Another thing to consider with ethics is with advertisement for goods if you have a buy & sell site, if the prices are deceptive with sales and etc. it can make people search for other sites of the same type that have a cleaner, nicer UI that is non-deceptive meaning you lose out on your customers and sales.
