6  This story was written in the 1950s. Much of this story takes place in a rooming house, a house where people rent rooms in which to live. Langston Hughes is best known for his poetry, shorty stories, and novels.

7  While we are reading “Thank You Ma’m”, my expectation is that you are following along in your text book and participating in our group discussion.  Failure to do so will affect your participation grade in my class.  Turn to page 129 of your textbook.

9 1. The story takes place at eleven o’clock at night. Since it is late at night, the woman may be in danger. 2. The first paragraph tells you that woman is strong and fearless and that the boy is small and is probably in need of money since he tried to take her purse. 3. I can infer that the characters are in conflict. I can also infer that the young boy does have a conscience because at first, he does not lie to the woman.

He may learn an important lesson about life in this new environment.

In your letter tell about your experience with Mrs. Jones, sharing what you learned. In your letter, give background information about what happened to you in the past. For example, explain who you are, what you did, and how it affected you.  Remember: ▪ Letters have a greeting, body, and closing. ▪ Complete sentences ▪ Use at least 2 examples of figurative language ▪ Think about how Roger may have changed in 20 years

22 CHARACTERIZATION  Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.  Characterization is revealed through direct characterization and indirect characterization.

23 DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION  Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is.  Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.”  Explanation: The author is directly telling the audience the personality of these two children. The boy is “patient” and the girl is “quiet.”

24 INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION Speech - What does the character say? How does the character speak? Thoughts - What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings? Effect on others toward the character - What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character? Actions - What does the character do? How does the character behave? Looks - What does the character look like? How does the character dress?

25 TIP #1: Use the mnemonic device of STEAL to remember the five types of indirect characterization TIP #2: Use indirect characterization to analyze visual media: Film: Look at how the character dresses and moves. Note the facial expressions when the director moves in for a close-up shot. Drama: Pay attention to the way that the characters reveal their thoughts during a soliloquy.

26 SUSPENSE  Suspense - is the sense of anticipation or worry that the author makes the reader feel. Suspense is the lack of certainty the author creates, leaving the reader to wonder what will happen. It draws the reader into the story and creates a sense of momentum to the plot.
