Force Notes

Inertia Whether it is moving or at rest, every object resists any change to its motion Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist change in its motion

Newton’s First Law An object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force It is also known as the law of inertia

Inertia in Life When your car stops suddenly, inertia causes you to keep moving forward The seat belt exerts a force to keep you safely in place when the motion of your car spontaneously changes

Mass Mass is the amount of matter in an object. The SI unit for mass is the kilogram (kg) You describe the mass of smaller objects in terms of grams – Nickel= about 5 grams – Bicycle= 10 kilograms – Small car= 1,000 kilograms

Inertia and Mass The amount of inertia an object has depends on its mass The greater the mass of an object, the greater its inertia.

Newton’s Second Law Also known as the law of motion Force= mass x acceleration

Newton’s Third Law For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
