4 History Oldest record of marijuana use was by Chinese Emperor Shen Nung in 2727 B.C. focus was on its powers as a medication for rheumatism, gout, malaria, and absent- mindedness Use spread from China to India Muslims too used it recreationally for alcohol consumption was banned by the Koran Muslims introduced hashish, whose popularity spread quickly Eventually spread through Africa as well. Spread to Europe by 500 A.D. In 1545 the Spaniards brought marijuana to the Americas Introduced to Jamestown in 1610

5 History By 1890, hemp had been replaced by cotton as a major cash crop in southern states Didn’t become popular in the United States until the 1920’s Marijuana was listed in the United States Pharmacopeia from 1850 until 1942 and was prescribed for various conditions The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 classified marijuana along with heroin and LSD as a Schedule I drug After over a decade of decreasing use, marijuana smoking began an upward trend once more in the early 1990s, especially among teenagers.

Users in the US spent $51 billion last year. 53% of lifetime users started from ages 12-17 ⅙ people who start as a teen become addicted More teenagers use marijuana than use cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and all other illicit drugs combined In 2014 21.2% high school seniors used marijuana, while 13.6% used cigarettes in the last 30 days
