Lesson 22

What does Baptism mean for us every day of our lives?

What new attitude did God work in us when we were baptized? Romans 6:1-4a, 11a What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death… So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin… I died and was buried with Christ to sin When I was baptized…

What new attitude did God work in us when we were baptized? Romans 6:4b, 5b, 10b, 11 …in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life… we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his… the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. I was raised with Christ to a new life When I was baptized…

Key Point #1 Through Baptism, I died and rose with Christ, that is, God gave me the desire to have nothing to do with sin anymore, but to live a new life.

Evaluate… Read Morning and Evening Prayer, pp 32 & 33 in Luther’s Small Catechism. Why do you think Dr. Luther suggested starting both prayers with the sign of the cross and in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

What then do our baptisms remind us to do every day? Ephesians 4:22-24 put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. Our baptisms remind us every day to… Put off the Old Self

What then do our baptisms remind us to do every day? Romans 6:2, 12-13a How can we who died to sin still live in it?... Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness… get rid of all sinful desires and actions Our baptisms remind us every day to… Put off the Old Self

What then do our baptisms remind us to do every day? Romans 6:13b, 14 …but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. Offer ourselves to God and live to serve Him Our baptisms remind us every day to… Put on the New Self

Our baptisms remind us every day to… Put on the New Self

Key Point #2 Our baptisms remind us every day to put off the old sinful way of living and to put on the new holy way of living.

Discuss As a Christian, I will never be done reliving my baptism in this life.

How do I put off the old self and put on the new self every day? Psalm 51:4a, 17 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight… The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. †being sorry for my sins. This happens by (Contrition)

How do I put off the old self and put on the new self every day? Psalm 32:5, 10 I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin… Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD. This happens by (Repentance) †being sorry for my sins. †Trusting God’s forgiveness

How do I put off the old self and put on the new self every day? Romans 6:17-18 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. †I am thankful for the blessings God gives me in baptism This happens because †being sorry for my sins. †Trusting God’s forgiveness

Discuss Someone who calls themselves a Christian says to you, “I don’t worry about sinning, since Jesus died to take away the sins of the world and God loves everyone.” How could this statement be true? How could it be incorrect?

Key Point #3 I put off the old self daily by contrition and repentance, and I put on the new self out of thanks to God.

Your friend says to you, “I hardly ever think about my baptism, but it doesn’t seem to matter. I still live a good Christian life.” How might you respond?

Lesson 22 My baptism reminds me to put off the old, sinful way of living and to put on the new, holy way of living every day.
