2 LESSON 1 YOUR TOTAL HEALTH You are responsible for your own health. Health is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. Health Triangle

3 Physical health refers to how well your body functions. Actions to take that will help maintain and improve your physical health include: 1.Get 8-10 hours of sleep each night. 2.Eat nutritious meals and drink 8 cups of water each day. 3.Engage in 30-60 minutes of physical activity every day. 4.Avoid the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. 5.Bathe daily, and floss and brush your teeth every day. PHYSICAL HEALTH

4 Mental/emotional health reflects how you feel about yourself, how you meet the demands of daily life, and cope with problems. People who are mentally and emotionally healthy: Enjoy challenges that help them grow Accept responsibility for their actions Have a sense of control over their life Can express their emotions in appropriate ways Usually can deal with life’s stresses and frustrations Generally have a positive outlook Make thoughtful and responsible decisions MENTAL/EMOTIONAL HEALTH

5 How well you get along with others reflects your social health. Individuals in your social network include your family, friends, teachers, and members of the community. Maintaining healthy relationships includes: Seeking and lending support when needed. Communicating clearly and listening to others. Showing respect and care for yourself and others. SOCIAL HEALTH

6 KEEPING A BALANCE When your health triangle is balanced you will have a high level of wellness. Wellness is an overall state of wellbeing or total health.

7 THE HEALTH CONTINUUM Your health and wellness is always changing. Your health at any moment can be seen as a point along a continuum, or sliding scale, such as the one shown below.

8 LESSON 2: INFLUENCES ON YOUR HEALTH Heredity, environment, attitude, behavior, media, and technology can all influence your health.

9 HEREDITY Heredity refers to all the traits that were biologically passed on to you from your parents. Examples are eye color, hair color, and body type.

10 ENVIRONMENT Physical Environment- the sum of your surroundings. Factors that affect your health include: Neighborhood and school safety Air and water quality Availability of parks, recreational facilities, and libraries Access to medical care Social Environment includes your peers- people of the same age who share similar interests, they also include your friends. Culture - the collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group.

11 UNDERSTANDING YOUR INFLUENCES You can take control of your health by understanding the factors that influence it. Other influences on an individuals health include: o Behavior - you can choose to avoid high risk behaviors that affect your health and choose healthful behaviors instead. o Media and Technology- o HOW DO MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY EFFECT YOUR HEALTH? Web sites that have.gov and.edu in their addresses, or sites maintained by professional health organizations will contain valid health information.

12 LESSON 3: HEALTH RISKS AND YOUR BEHAVIOR Engaging in risk behaviors can harm your health. Risk Behaviors- are actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others.

13 These risk behaviors can lead to heart disease, cancer, and other serious illnesses later in life. Tobacco use Unhealthy dietary behaviors Inadequate physical activity Alcohol and other drug use Sexual behaviors that may result in HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases, and unintended pregnancies. Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence. RECOGNIZING RISK BEHAVIORS

14 Cumulative risks are related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. Cumulative risks also increase when several risk factors are combined. You can take action to reduce your exposure to health risks. Prevention- taking steps to keep something from happening or getting worse. Abstinence- a deliberate decision to avoid high-risk behaviors, including sexual activity and the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. HOW TO AVOID OR REDUCE RISKS

15 Lifestyle factors are the personal habits or behaviors related to the way a person lives. Lifestyle factors that can improve a person’s level of health include: Getting eight hours of sleep each night Starting each day with a healthy breakfast Eating a variety of nutritious foods each day Being physically active for 30 to 60 minutes most days of the week Maintaining a healthy weight Abstaining from smoking or using other tobacco products Abstaining from the use of alcohol and other drugs LIFESTYLE FACTORS

16 LESSON 4: PROMOTING HEALTH AND WELLNESS Individual, family, community, and national health require planning and responsible behavior on everyone’s part.

17 THE NATION’S HEALTH GOALS Healthy People is a nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan designed to serve as a guide for improving the health of all people in the United States. Some goals for Healthy People 2020 include: 1.Promote the best possible health in order to end preventable death, illness, injury, and disability. 2.Eliminate health disparities. 3.Make wellness a way of life and enhance quality of life for individuals and communities. 4.Promote health places and environments.

18 BECOMING HEALTH LITERATE A health-literate person knows how to find and use reliable health information. To become an informed individual who can make sound health decisions, one must: Know where to find health information. Decide if the information is correct. Assess the risks and benefits of treatment. Figure our how much medicine to take. Understand test results.

19 Health Literacy refers to a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services, and to use these resources to promote one’s health and wellness. Qualities of a health literate individual include: A critical thinker and problem solver A responsible, productive citizen A self-directed learner An effective communicator HEALTH LITERACY
