The MORE cheese you have, the LESS cheese you have. Swiss cheese has lots of holes. The MORE holes you have, the LESS cheese you have. The MORE cheese you have, the MORE holes you have. Thus, MORE cheese means LESS cheese.

This Sentence Is False If “This Sentence Is False” is true, then the sentence is false, which would in turn mean that it is actually true, but this would mean that it is false, & so on ad infinitum. Similarly, if “This Sentence Is False” is false, then the sentence is true, which would in turn mean that it is actually false, but this would mean that it is true, & so on ad infinitum.

Paradox A true statement that at first seems to contradict common sense or logic. Scripture uses them often: “The 1 st shall be last.” “To be great, become a servant.” “To save your life, you must lose it.” Jesus is a living paradox: God & man. Also a sheep & Shepherd [Isaiah 40:1-11; 42:1-4; 52:13-53:12] John as well: [1:24-34, 10:7-15]

Jesus’ Paradox: Sheep Shepherd So Jesus is both a sheep & a Shepherd… What does it mean to us? Elders are called to a difficult imitation. They must imitate Jesus’ paradox. They must volunteer for the job. They must be a respected example. They must serve the sheep [Mt 20:24-28] They have leadership titles [Ac 20:17-32]

Jesus’ Paradox: Sheep Shepherd So Jesus is both a sheep & a Shepherd… What does it mean to us? Elders are called to a difficult imitation. Members are called to be sheep/followers. We must be subject to the elders. We must appreciate them [1Th 5:12-13] We must obey them [Heb 13:17] We can’t ignore these words. [Eph 5:22-24] It isn’t done w/ marriage or children.

Jesus’ Paradox: Sheep Shepherd So Jesus is both a sheep & a Shepherd… What does it mean to us? Elders are called to a difficult imitation. Members are called to be sheep/followers. How do “non-members” take these verses? What are they trying to avoid? Membership is vague in the NT. But, today’s verses assume it. Submit to God’s plan for sheep & shepherds.
