What do the words in bold refer to? It one ones they One Another earthquake that shook San Francisco on October 17 th, 1989 a wide and busy road people the plates an earthquake

Give two reasons why the earthquake in 1989 killed fewer people. Because: 1.It happened in the evening when people were travelling home. 2. It didn’t happen in the centre of town, but fifty kilometres away. 3.Buildings that are less than fifty years old are stronger.

Describe in your own words how an earthquake happens. If it is a light earthquake, you will see the lamp swinging, glasses and plates in the cupboards may shake or even fall on the floor. Next, in a heavy earthquake the earth will suddenly shake very hard for a few seconds, and many buildings may fall down. Then, in most cases, the electricity will go down and in many places fires start. Sometimes, the earth will shake again, even up until a few days later. In the end, everything become quiet.

Discuss the following question: 1.In the last paragraph the writer says that if a new earthquake hits San Francisco, there will be a lot of damage because San Francisco is ten times bigger than in 1906.Do you think he is right? Explain your answer. 2.What can we do to reduce( 减少 ) the damage( 破坏 )of the earthquakes?

That could be true, because many more buildings and roads have been built over the past one hundred years. The city is bigger, and buildings are taller so there could be a lot of damage. On the other hand, buildings are stronger now,and many buildings are especially designed to stand earthquakes. When an earthquake hits, these buildings will move and sway, but not fall down. So it is possible that there will not be much damage.

How can we reduce the damage? First, don’t build houses along the lines where two of the earth’s plates join together; second, build houses on rock not on sand; third, make the houses as strong as possible.

which, is recorded by scientists. which are often felt, but usually don’t cause damage. which whose which, which

Make sentences with the following shake a number of as many/much as at( 表速度) population

Answer the following questions: When did the earthquake happen? The earthquake hit the city on a hot September night. How strong was the earthquake? The earth had a strength of 6.3 on the Richter scale. What happened? First the lamps started swinging and all the plates and cups were shaking. You could hear a loud cracking noise and it was as if a train passed under the house. Some houses fell down.

Answer the following questions: What were most people doing? At the time of the earthquake many people were sleeping. Because of the heat some people slept outside the house and that saved many people. Was anything broken? Many houses and buildings were destroyed and roads and railways were damaged.

Answer the following questions: How were the people rescued? The first rescue teams that arrived were Chinese soldiers. Later they were helped by international rescue teams. How many people were injured? How many people were killed? Very many people were hurt. About 1,300 people died in the earthquake.
