We come from across our state—Yoopers and Trolls. Some even come from beyond Michigan’s borders. What we share is a love of students and teaching and a desire to learn for the sake of others. At the start of summer, we delay our family outings, postpone sleeping in, hold off on sunscreen, insect repellent, and weeding our gardens, defer biking, hiking, swimming, and down time all in the name of professionalism. Welcome. Your presence alone gives us much to celebrate. WWW.MIELANETWORK.WEEBLY.COM

We are living through a time of great educational change: common state standards, an ever greater emphasis on assessment and evaluation for teachers, administrators, and students, the proliferation of a range of educational choices from both public and private sectors—think home schooling, private and parochial schools, and virtual schooling as a few examples, set against a backdrop of dwindling educational resources, particularly for those most in need. As a result, teaching is more challenging and fraught than ever before. This is no time to teach in isolation. By coming together, our most important educational resources, you, our teachers, can create a network of support that will stretch across cities, districts, and far beyond our classroom doors. This summer, we come together to learn ways to improve the teaching of writing and to align instruction to provide a coherent curriculum K-12. After years of school reform one thing we’ve learned is that aligned curriculum across the grades greatly benefits student learning. And if there’s one thing we’re sure of, given the present educational climate, we’re stronger together than apart. www.mielanetwork.weebly.com WWW.MIELANETWORK.WEEBLY.COM

WRITING INVITATION… Demonstration/Show me: Nancie Atwell talks about her writing territories. One way I think about my writing territories is to think of Firsts in my life. For example, I think of the first time I fell in a lagoon or the first time I rode my two-wheeler all by myself or my first crush. Let me share my first time riding my bicycle on my own. I remember how my dad taught me to balance and how I kept falling, mostly on the grass by our sidewalk. I remember feeling so proud when I finally rode down the sidewalk by myself. I wanted to show off for Jeffrey, the older boy down the street and I called out to him as I rode by. WWW.MIELANETWORK.WEEBLY.COM
8
Now, let me try again but this time, I’ll try to live in the moment. I’ll try to write it as if I was writing a story. I swung my leg over the bar. With my right foot steady on the sidewalk I carefully placed my left foot on the pedal and pushed down, standing tall, hands gripping the handlebars. The wheels turned. I heard the bike chain tighten. I moved forward slowly, circling the pedals, momentum building. Wobbly, I fought my fear of falling. Circle, circle, circle, feet moving up and down on the rubber pedals, handlebars slippery with sweat. I felt Dad watching from our front lawn. I couldn’t look back. “Jeffrey, Jeffrey! Look! I’m riding!” Wind in my face, blowing pride. WWW.MIELANETWORK.WEEBLY.COM

BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF WRITERS 1.Your turn. A First Time Try to stay in the moment. Write with small, precise details. 2. Share your writing. Tell your partner what you liked or appreciated. 3. To Think About… How did you feel while sharing? What did you notice? 4. A Shared or Touchstone experience—we’ll refer back to this writing WWW.MIELANETWORK.WEEBLY.COM

TODAY’S WRITING PROCESS Interactive Invitation Read the previous chart for three purposes: 1.Place a check over the columns you instruct on a regular basis. 2.Place a circle over the columns you would like to learn more about and teach with greater frequency. 3.Turn and Talk—Based on your self-assessment, set a realistic goal for your personal learning and teaching this coming year. Plan to explore the units this week with your goal in mind. WWW.MIELANETWORK.WEEBLY.COM
