1 STOPPING STIGMA AT SOUTH ALLEGHENY MIDDLE SCHOOL

2 MENTORS Selected by 7 th grade teachers (18) Possess good leadership skills and positive personality traits Mentors wrote the grant, attended two training sessions, and came up with ideas for Stop Stigma Week

3 MENTORS Painted banners and mannequins to display at the assembly and in the display case Taught lessons during Character Education Character Education is a shortened period at the end of the day where students are in interest groups

4 STOP STIGMA WEEK Monday: Pre-Survey during Character Ed Tuesday: Assembly (3 speakers) Wednesday: Myths & Facts of Mental Illnesses Discussion Thursday: Common disorders matching and discussion Friday: Green Out and post-survey

5 SIGNING THE PLEDGE Informed students about the pledge on Monday Mentors sat outside the cafeteria during lunch with iPads asking students to sign the pledge After students signed the pledge they received a green rubber bracelet that read “Stop The Stigma”

7 OVERALL RESULTS Overall, most students felt more educated and learned about stigma and how to treat people better. 75% of South Allegheny Middle School students signed the pledge to end stigma

8 REACTIONS “I like the assembly, it kind of stopped the name calling.” -Carlyse C. “I learned that people with mental illness are the same as anybody else.” -Cameron T. “The program was very informational and kept the kids involved.” –Miss Hays “It made students aware of what people with mental illnesses go through.” -Logan
