Irony Irony is when the opposite of what you expect to happen, happens.

3 Types of Irony 1.Verbal 2.Situational 3.Dramatic

Verbal Irony (Sarcasm) Verbal irony occurs when the literal words spoken by an individual are meant to convey the opposite of what they seem to say. An example of this would be if your date shows up in jeans and T-shirt and you say, "Well, you didn't have to dress up."

Situational Irony Situational irony occurs when events come together in an unexpected and surprising way. Generally, this situation has some element of coincidence or connection. For example, a person stepping out of the way of a water hose to avoid getting wet just to end up falling in a pool would be an example of situational irony.

Dramatic Irony When the audience or reader has a full understanding of a situation while the characters do not. For instance, if you were in a restaurant and said out loud, 'I can't wait to eat the spaghetti I ordered,' and there were people around who knew that the spaghetti was poisoned and that you would die as soon as you took a bite, your situation would be one of dramatic irony.
