1 Languages for Careers Seminar CCEA Qualifications: Level 1 Certificate in Understanding Business Enterprise with Languages & Tourism Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Business Enterprise with Languages & Tourism (UBELT)

2 Entitlement Framework UBELT Level 1 & 2 meets the Entitlement Framework Requirements Level 1 broadly equates to GCSE grade D to G Level 2 broadly equates to GCSE grade A* to C

3 Skills Development Tourism is a priority industry in Northern Ireland – UBELT brings together a range of skills in languages, enterprise, tourism and intercultural working Intercultural working and enterprise are important skills for young people in today’s global economy Skills development in planning, research and presentation which are relevant to a work-related topic.

4 Benefits to Learners UBELT builds upon the broad objectives of the Northern Ireland Curriculum. In particular, enabling learners to:  develop as individuals and contributors to the economy, society and environment  develop speaking and writing skills in a modern European language  develop an understanding of diversity in the context of learning and working with others  develop an understanding of Business Enterprise and the Tourism industry in order to develop work-based skills.

8 Why learn a language? Improves English Boosts brain power Increases job prospects & mobility Develops skills like communication, team work, analysis, problem solving, public speaking Helps create empathy with people from other cultures and countries.

9 OLA Formerly Graded Objectives in Modern Languages Suitable for KS3,short courses, enrichment courses Aligned to NI Curriculum Appeals to interests, aspirations and experience of KS3 pupils Develops communication skills and self-esteem Recognition of Achievement Preparation for GCSE Paper based exam in summer Assessed at centre.

11 QCF and UBELT languages QCF award recognises 4 skills at 4 levels To achieve award students have to pass all units at the level entered. UBELT students do 2 skills, speaking and writing Offered in 5 Languages Currently paper based exam assessed at centre Contexts and topics generally similar to GCSE Each level builds on previous one New qualification being developed for first teaching Sept 2017.

12 Benefits of UBELT Cultural awareness is essential in society with 51% increase in racist attacks in the 12 months up to June 2014 Recognises the importance of languages as a workplace skill Provides an opportunity for collaboration across departments Helps maintain the status of languages Employers value languages because of the skill development.
