7. The children really enjoyed reading and learning from a high quality quirky non- fiction text. The level of discussion and ideas generated were far higher than with more traditional non-fiction extracts or texts in previous years. The book will be revisited again in a similar way next year as the topic has developed children's confidence with non-fiction and produced a high standard of writing throughout Upper KS2. The Year 5 Spring data showed a high number of children making good to outstanding progress in their writing. Reading levels were also noticeably impacted upon in a positive way alongside increased confidence in approaching non-fiction style texts and questions in their summer QCA tests, which we hope they will carry forward into their Year 6 SATs. This year we have plans to take what the previous Year 5 pupils achieved as a model of excellence upon which we can build more cross curricular links that utilise the content and presentation of the books to coincide with the developments in the new Primary Curriculum.
