30 How to support your child in Maths

31 Changes to KS2 Science

32 Tips Support them with their revision packs by looking at questions together (remember the answers are included). Praise their efforts to build confidence and question how they did something – ‘I would have never thought to have done it like that. What a good approach.’ Lots of praise – remember children can find this stressful so while encouraging them to revise try not to put too much pressure on them. Approach revision through games, practise questions, family team challenge games and encourage them to try and beat you. The internet is great for finding sample questions and games on particular areas. Times tables are key so practise these daily even for just 5 minutes. Encourage your child to work against the clock to encourage speed in the tests without rushing and making silly slips. Encourage them to go back and check answers thoroughly at the end of a revision session – not just read over them quickly. Reading regularly and questioning them about this.

33 Tips Put up key words, methods and things to remember around the house. If they seem them daily for 4 weeks it will really help it stick. Learn the year 5 and 6 spellings by heart as they are challenging and there are bound to be some in their tests. Create a list of things they are struggling on and work on these – ticking off things they can do will really help boost confidence. Make sure that your child is aware that getting stuck is not a problem. Move on and give them another challenge and come back to the hard ones at the end and/or go through it together. Ensure your child timetables some relaxation time too! Reassure your child it is not long now and that they will be able to feel proud of the effort they have put in. Plus I have planned a relaxing and fun week project for them to do in school while the year 5’s are tested and that they will have the ICT suite to themselves to do this! They like to know that year 5 will be doing tests too.
