GraffitiGraffiti Using the coloured pen you have been given, visit as many as the posters around the room as you can and write down anything you know about the key terms or diagrams End

DNADNA Lesson Learning Outcomes: Increasing Difficulty State the purpose of DNA Identify where DNA is stored in a cell Carry out a practical to extract DNA from plant cells

What is dna? What is dna? DNA is amazing! It can make EXACT copies of itself It provides instructions for cells to make proteins

Video time! We are going to extract the DNA from Kiwi Fruit Watch the video to find out how to do it…

Match the procedure with the reason – write it in next to the correct step

How similar is your DNA to...? The person sitting next to you

How similar is your DNA to...? 99.7 - 99.9%

How similar is your DNA to...? Chimpanzee

How similar is your DNA to...? 95%

How similar is your DNA to...? A banana

How similar is your DNA to...? 50%

Humans have human genes Organisms differ because they have different genes. What makes organismsdifferent? What makes organismsdifferent? Gerbils have gerbil genes Bananas have (yes, you’ve guessed it) banana genes!

Genetic informationGenetic information  The nucleus of living cells contain chromosomes which are made up of a string of genes.  Different genes control the development of different characteristics by issuing instructions to the cell.

Chromosomes and their genes are made of a molecule called DNA. DNA molecules carry the code that controls what cells are made of and what they do. DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. Each chromosome is a very long molecule of tightly coiled DNA. What is DNA?What is DNA? The DNA molecule looks like a twisted ladder this spiral shape is called a DOUBLE HELIX

The double helix ‘ladder’ of a DNA molecule is held together by ‘rungs’ made from pairs of chemicals called bases. DNA BasesDNA Bases There are four types of bases, and they are usually identified by their initials. A T C G

Base pairs hold the two strands of the DNA helix together. It is the sequence of these bases along a DNA molecule that forms the genetic code – it’s that simple! DNA BasesDNA Bases AT CG CG AT
