Today’s Sermon: Psalms 15-16, “Description of a Citizen of Zion/The Lord the Psalmist’s Portion in Life and Deliverer in Death” by Pastor Jim Bomkamp

Previous from Psalm 13 Here we saw King David again asking the Lord how long He will delay in rescuing him from his enemies. Seeing his enemies being exalted over him time and time again, David asked the Lord to consider and answer him.

Previous from Psalm 14 1. King David described the person who does not know God as being “a fool”. 2. This description of the “wicked” person the apostle Paul quotes for the most part in the third chapter of Romans. 3. King David reveals that all those who are “the wicked” will persecute those who are “the righteous”.

Background Psalm 15 King David describes or us what person it is who may ascend up to God’s dwelling, and the rest of the Psalm is a list of character qualities of such a man.

Background, Psalm 16 1. Here, the Psalmist states the fact that the Lord is the portion or inheritance of the saint, and we will discuss the fact that what the grace of God is in our lives as believers in Christ, is God Himself. 2. The Psalm will then turn Messianic and the Messiah will speak through David about how that He will not suffer decay, and we will see that this foretells the conquering of death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Psalm 15 (NASB95) 1 O Lord, who may abide in Your tent? Who may dwell on Your holy hill? 2 He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, And speaks truth in his heart. 3 He does not slander with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor takes up a reproach against his friend ; 4 In whose eyes a reprobate is despised, But who honors those who fear the Lord ; He swears to his own hurt and does not change; 5 He does not put out his money at interest, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken.

Psalm 16 (NASB95) 1 Preserve me, O God, for I take refuge in You. 2 I said to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good besides You.” 3 As for the saints who are in the earth, They are the majestic ones in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied; I shall not pour out their drink offerings of blood, Nor will I take their names upon my lips. 5 The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You support my lot. 6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me. 7 I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night. 8 I have set the Lord continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will dwell securely. 10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. 11 You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.
