2 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) Agreed on at the Bretton Woods conference in 1944. GATT was approved in 1947 and provided trade rules for countries of the world. The purpose of GATT was to encourage members to gradually lower tariffs so that trade was freer. Total international trade in 2000 was 22 times higher than it was in 1950.

3 World Trade Organization Est. 1995 to trade by trade barriers and making trade more predictable Jobs: –Ensure terms of trade agreements are followed –Settles trade disputes between governments –Conducts trade negotiations

4 The decisions made by the WTO are binding and must be followed –These decisions are made by coming to a consensus –This means that: Decisions take a long time Often use vague language, that is open to interpretation

6 Disputes in the WTO A panel of 3 officials hears the arguments of both sides and makes decisions Can force country to change laws or make payments

7 Sanctions The WTO has the power to use sanctions: –Economic actions such as trade boycott to enforce a decision.

8 Softwood Lumber Dispute United states imposed duties on Canadian softwood lumber EXPLAIN!: Ruling: In Canada’s favour: Removed tariffs on Canadian lumber and required the U.S. to repay about 80% of the more than 5 billion it had collected
