Making Waves… Light Waves

What do we Know? What things do you know about “Light” all ready? What can you tell me about the properties of light?

Light is Energy Light is simply a form of energy Light travels in straight lines composed of waves Visible light is a range of wave lengths that only makes up a small part of the Electromagnetic Spectrum

Light & Waves Don’t allow the fact that light travels in waves confuse you with regards to how light travels and behaves… The waves in light are only one trillionth of a mm or 0.000 000 000 001 The waves are so close together that they still act and behave as if they were just a straight line

Energy Waves A wave is a “beam” of energy Waves can be manipulated to form different types of energy All of the different types of energy that can be formed by the different types of wave lengths can be found in the Electromagnetic Spectrum Three things determine a waves type - Wave Length - Frequency - Amplitude

EMS and Waves Now lets open up the Science in Action 8 textbooks to page 212 - 213 Have a look and read up on “waves” on those two pages.

What’s in a Wave

What’s a Wave Let’s practice drawing the following waves with the following dimensions on graph paper 1. Wave length = 20 & Amplitude = 2 2. Wave length = 12 & Amplitude = 3 3. Wave length = 24 & Amplitude = 5 4. Wave length = 8 & Amplitude = 6

Practice Waves Wave length = 20 & Amplitude = 2 Step 1 – Divide the wave length of 20 by 4 20 ÷ 4 = 5

Practice Waves Wave length = 20 & Amplitude = 2 Step 2 – Because our wave will be split into 4 equal parts each 5 units long, we can place dots every 5 units along the line of symmetry

Practice Waves Wave length = 20 & Amplitude = 2 Step 3 – Now, above the 2 nd dot on your line of symmetry, count up however many units your amplitude is and place a dot… in this case the amplitude is 2

Practice Waves Wave length = 20 & Amplitude = 2 Step 4 – Now, below the 4 th dot on your line of symmetry, count down however many units your amplitude is and place a dot

Practice Waves Wave length = 20 & Amplitude = 2 Step 5 – Connect the dots with a smooth and uniform wave

Practice Waves Wave length = 20 & Amplitude = 2 Wave length of 20 Amplitude of 2 Try to make the sizes relative to one and other

You try!! Wave length = 12 & Amplitude = 3 Step 1 – Divide the wave length of 20 by 4 12 ÷ 4 = 3

You try!! Wave length = 12 & Amplitude = 3 Step 2 – Because our wave will be split into 4 equal parts each 3 units long, we can place dots every 3 units along the line of symmetry

Practice Waves Wave length = 12 & Amplitude = 3 Step 3 – Now, above the 2 nd dot on your line of symmetry, count up however many units your amplitude is and place a dot… in this case the amplitude is 3

Practice Waves Wave length = 12 & Amplitude = 3 Step 4 – Now, below the 4 th dot on your line of symmetry, count down however many units your amplitude is and place a dot

You try!! Wave length = 12 & Amplitude = 3 Step 5 – Connect the dots with a smooth and uniform wave

You try!! Wave length = 24 & Amplitude = 5

You try!! Wave length = 8 & Amplitude = 6

Your Task for Today You are now being given a worksheet that deals with making waves. Take your time to practice this skill… this will be on the test A test is approaching

Reviewing the Waves Worksheet

Question 1 Wave length = 12 & Amplitude = 3 Wave length of 12 Amplitude of 3

Question 2 Wave length = 8 & Amplitude = 7 Wave length of 8 Amplitude of 7

Question 3 Wave length = 12 & Amplitude = 5 Wave length of 12 Amplitude of 5

Question 4 Wave length = 10 & Amplitude = 2 Wave length of 10 Amplitude of 2

Question 5 Wave length = 20 & Amplitude = 6 Wave length of 20 Amplitude of 6

Question 6 Wave length = 4 & Amplitude = 1 Wave length of 4 Amplitude of 1

Question 7 Wave length = 40 & Amplitude = 11 Wave length of 40 Amplitude of 11

Question 8 Wave length = 24 & Amplitude = 5 Wave length of 24 Amplitude of 5

Question 9 Wave length = 48 & Amplitude = 4 Wave length of 48 Amplitude of 4 Off the Chart

Your Marks Check your marks and see how you did If you need more help on this topic be sure to get it This will be on the QUIZ!!!
