4/13/15 Mr. Faia 6 th Grade Science

 There are over 1 million species of animals  What is a species?  What level of classification is a species?

 Animals are many celled organisms that must obtain food by eating other organisms  In other words, animals are…?

 Cells:  ALL animals are multicellular  Cells group together to form tissue  Tissues group together to form organs  Organs group together to form systems

 Reproduction  Most animals reproduce through sexual reproduction  This is the joining of a sperm cell and egg cell  This process is called fertilization

 Reproduction (cont.):  Some animals can reproduce asexually

 Movement:  Most movement is related to 3 main things: 

 How many animal species are there today? (About)  How do animals get food?  What are the 3 reasons most animals move?  How can animals reproduce?  Name an animal that can reproduce asexually?  How are animals arranged?

 There are 3 major things ALL animals need: 

 Water, food, and oxygen comes from an animals environment  An animals body is adapted to respond to its environment  What is an adaptation?

 Adaptation – is a characteristic that helps an organism survive or reproduce

 There are 3 types of animals when it comes to eating 

 Herbivores:  Animals that only eat plants  What are some examples?

 Carnivores:  Animals that only eat other animals  Predators hunt, and prey is hunted (and eaten)  What are some examples?

 Omnivores:  Eat both plants and animals  What are some examples?

 Think of some animals with adaptations to escape predators:

 How many species of animals are there?  These are then broken up into 35 phyla  (The plural of phylum)

 Animals are classified by how they are related.  Biologists look at the structure of an animals body  Also look at the way it develops as an embryo.

 Biologists also examine the animal’s DNA  What is DNA?

 Animals are also classified on whether or not they have a backbone  What is a backbone?

 Invertebrates – Animals without a backbone  Vertebrates – Animals with backbone  Which group makes up 95% of animal species?

 Bilateral symmetry is a line symmetry that divides an organism in half  It creates a mirror image

 Radial symmetry is having many lines of symmetry that meet at a midpoint  Ex. – Bicycle Wheel

 All complex animals have either radial or bilateral symmetry  Name some examples:

1) What 2 types of symmetry do complex animals exhibit? 2) Describe 2 characteristics that all animals share. 3) How can bilateral symmetry help a predator? 4) List 3 things all animals need. 5) List the major characteristics that are used to classify animals. 6) Draw an example of bilateral and radial symmetry.
