Use of force to control & maintain power over a spouse in the home What is Hazing? Harassing newcomers to a group in an abusive and humiliating way Key Terms

4  Child Abuse  Children are frequent targets of abuse because they are small & weak  Domestic Violence  Use of force to control & maintain power over a spouse, a fiancé, a boyfriend, or a girlfriend  Hazing  Harassing newcomers in an abusive & humiliating way  Elder Abuse – harm can take place in nursing home or home What Are The 4 Common Types of Abuse?

5  1. Tension-Building Phase  A time of emotional abuse such as insults or threats  2. Violent Episode Phase  An act of physical abuse occurs such as choking or hitting  3. Honeymoon Phase  When the couple makes up.  This phase is often the reason people stay in abusive relationships. What Are the Three Stages Of An Abusive Relationship?

6  Depression  Low self esteem  Poor appetite or overeating  Low energy or fatigue  Poor concentration; difficulty making decisions  Difficulty sleeping  Feelings of worthlessness &  Feelings of guild, shame, & anxiety What Are The Effects of Abuse?

7 How Do You Protect Yourself From Abuse? 1. Create a supportive network of friends and family 2. Avoid Disrespectful People 3. Be Assertive Not Passive Or Aggressive Abusers prey on people who appear vulnerable or have low self-esteem 4. Show Disapproval Showing disapproval shows the abuser that their behavior is not acceptable, that you won’t tolerate it & you want it to stop.
