1 Writing a Memorandum on Preventing WWII You have been hired by the World Peace Archive to write a memorandum suggesting four actions that the US and its allies might have taken to prevent WW2.

2 Include the following: The four most important actions the Allied Powers might have taken to prevent the outbreak of WW2. These 4 actions should be prioritized in the memo (most to least important) Each action should include a ½ page statement explaining why that action might have prevented the war as well as why that action was not taken Include at least 5 of the following terms in your paper: democracy, totalitarianism, fascism, propaganda, alliance, imperialism, isolationism, appeasement

3 Slide A -After WWI Germany in depression -Weimar Republic was a shaky government doomed for failure --Most of Europe was politically unstable due to bad economy -German generals blamed Jews for loss in WWI and Weimar republic for Versailles treaty

4 Slide B This slide shows it takes 100,000 marks to equal one dollar Germany spent 37 Billion and only collected 1.5 billion 1914 4 marks for a beer/ in 1923 4 trillion Unemployment, starvation, no savings

5 Slide C Austrian born (1889) Hitler criticizes Weimar (German Government) and is put in jail for uprising Writes “Mein Kampf” which details his plans for Germany Builds up Nazi party and tells Germans they are part of a master race destined to rule the world. He promises a new German Empire. Anti Weimar (government after WWI) and Anti- Jewish

6 Slide D 1932 Nazi’s are majority/Hitler uses fire and fear of communists He murders opposition and uses secret police Hitler Youth programs Destroys books/ forces Nazi sermons Nuremberg laws persecute Jews

7 Slide E Italy upset w/Versailles/ no land Mussolini appeals to nationalism and forms fascist party. Strong military/ Glory of ancient Rome Saving Italy from Communist Revolution No opposition (Black shirts-thugs) Improved economy and went after more natural resources 1935 he takes Ethiopia

8 Slide F Italy and Germany signed an alliance The Rome/Berlin Axis alliance. They fought in Spanish Civil War (1935) Franco in Spain won and Italy and Germany signed “Axis” alliance. The U.S. France and Britain did little to stop the fascist Franco from taking over. This encouraged Hitler and others

9 Slide G Japan also had a dictatorship arise in the years after WWI. Dependent on world markets/ hurting during depression Japan looked to add resources Manchuria in 1931 U.S. boycott and world wide depression led to Pearl Harbor and Japan joining Axis

10 Slide H Hitler took Austria and territory from France He then took aim at Czechoslovakia where 3 million Germans lived. Chamberlain appeased Hitler and signed the Munich pact which allowed Germany to take part of Czechoslovakia as long as they did not go further. Chamberlain called it “peace w/ honor” and was given a hero’s welcome at home.

11 Slide J Hitler signed a non aggression pact with Stalin and thought the French and British were weak. He attacked Poland on 9/1/39 and WWII began Poland fell in less than three weeks

16 Slide M Japan joined axis in 1940 and threatened Asian nations (China 1937) December 7 th 1941 “A date that will live in infamy.” Pearl Harbor attacked by Japan. 8 ships 188 planes, 2,300 Americans

17 Slide N “Yesterday December 7 th 1941- a date that will live in infamy- the United States was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the empire of Japan.” ---FDR He promises that we will pull through to “absolute victory.”

18 Slide O We enter WWII on the allied side officially on December 8 th 1941 France, GB, and the Soviet Union are our major allies We are called the Allied Powers
