5 CMS Muon Upgrade Scope  Focus on the “middle scope” scenario:  Barrel electronics upgrade (no US involvement)  Forward muon upgrades maintain trigger, increase offline coverage  Endcap Muon Cathode Strip Chambers (CSC):  Upgrade ME2/1 off-chamber electronics to cope with data volume/bandwidth  New Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors:  GE1/1 and 2/1 work with CSC ME1/1 and ME2/1 to maintain muon trigger  ME0 works with ME1/1 to maintain trigger and extends offline coverage  =2.4  2.9 5 Director's Progress Review --Muon Overview A. 7  Targeted focus on maintaining good performance of the CSCs and the forward muon trigger:  Historical US responsibilities in CMS  CSC off-chamber electronics upgrades for ME2/1:  Address bandwidth limitations, add capabilities for internal re- synchronization necessary in high rate environment o Upgrade optical link and electronics connected to it  GEM-CSC trigger and DAQ electronics:  Maintain forward muon trigger performance o Electronics routing GEM signals to CSC Optical Trigger Motherboard (OTMB) and CSC Track Finder (TF), o CSC firmware upgrades to integrate GEMs 7 US Scope in CMS Muon Upgrade Director's Progress Review --Muon OverviewA. 8 Conceptual Design: CSC Electronics  High data volumes/trigger rate require an increase in the bandwidth of links connecting electronics on the detector with the counting room  ME2/1 data rates up to 4 Gbps at HL-LHC, current links are 1 Gbps  New higher bandwidth links  Replacement electronics cards on each side of the link  Largely following in footsteps of ME1/1 upgrade just installed during LS-1 8 Director's Progress Review --Muon Overview A. 9 Conceptual Design: GEM Electronics  US focus on electronics routing GEM data to CSC local and global trigger reconstruction  The Optohybrid (OH) board routing data from front-end to CSC and CSC Track Finder  Link and backend (standard for CMS electronics hardware) 9 Director's Progress Review --Muon Overview A. 10  For CSC, the overall requirements are driven by ensuring continued good performance of the CSC system in HL- LHC regime  Implies chamber and readout electronics are to continue efficiently collecting and delivering data at the environment with increased rates and different operational conditions  Electronics GEM and CSC upgrades requirements:  Mutual compatibility of new components  Compatibility with existing CSC electronics  Compatibility with the central DAQ system  GEM specific: functionality and algorithms implemented in firmware need to respect trigger latency constraints and meet the designed performance 10 Requirements Director's Progress Review --Muon OverviewA. 11  Understand the impact of two factors on the overall CSC performance at HL-LHC:  Potential aging of the CSC chambers  Potential need to switch to a different type of gas  R&D goals:  Assess the degree of aging of the CSC chambers and develop operational model to minimize effects of aging o E.g. optimization of the HV operating points, gas mixtures etc.  Assess alternatives to the CF 4 in the gas mixture, develop an operational model maintaining acceptable performance of CSCs if CF 4 is restricted or banned o Study of alternative gas mixtures, impact on spacial and timing resolution, effects on aging o Assessment of options for better recuperation of CF 4 11 R&D Overview: CSC Detectors Director's Progress Review --Muon OverviewA. 12  Evaluate hardware and firmware design options under the following constraints:  Performance provided the expected data volume, trigger rate and latency limitations  Cost of the components, evolution of the cost/performance with time, expected availability in the future  Compatibility with the existing electronics systems and systems being designed as part of Phase-2 upgrades  Compatibility with mechanical and space limitations  Sufficient radiation hardness of the components and availability of options for recovery  Verify expected performance metrics by prototyping elements of the electronics system and taking measurements, as appropriate 12 R&D Overview: CSC & GEM Electronics Director's Progress Review --Muon OverviewA. 16  Health and safety hazards identified:  High voltage and mechanical hazards (trip over cables, heavy objects like chambers, crates, racks etc.) o Standard safety instruction and training  Radiation testing at GIF++, reactor and cyclotron facilities: o Follow protocols established by each facility  Environmental issues identified:  Use of CF 4 in gas mixtures used in CSC/GEMs o Widely used in gas detectors, but substantial impact on global warming: GWP 100y is 7000 times CO2, long lifetime –EU can ban CF 4 before the LHC has completed its program o A targeted R&D program is part of the plan: –CSC already recuperates about 50% of its CF 4 usage, could be able to increase the recuperated portion –A targeted R&D program to search for CF 4 alternatives 16 Environmental Protection, Health and Safety Director's Progress Review --Muon OverviewA. 17  The CSC community and management are led by US  Minimal dependency on external groups and thus low risks  Good US representation in GEM project management  US holds positions of the GEM Deputy PM, several L2 positions and is part of the Institutional Board leadership  US scope in DAQ/Trigger electronics and requirements are well defined and mostly self-contained o One well understood exception is the GBT link developed by CERN –A delay that could affect our schedule is extremely unlikely, but the situation is being monitored –A fallback plan in place: control over copper, commercial optical links for data transfer  Low dependence on other parts of the project 17 International Context and Coordination Director's Progress Review --Muon OverviewA.
