2 What is the mission for the U.N.? Founded in 1945 Mission – to maintain peace, develop good relations between countries, promote cooperation in solving the world’s problems, and encourage a respect for human rights. 51 countries were involved in the creation

4 United Nations General Assembly Operates like a global town hall Members can bring ideas forward to all for open discussion 193 members – each with one vote Approves budget, establishes agencies and programs, elects members to serve on agencies and coordinates programs through various committees. Secretariat The executive branch of the U.N. which oversees programs and policies and carries out day – to – day operations Secretary General is the chief executive who is nominated by Security Council and chosen by General Assembly. Secretarial staff’s loyalty is to the U.N., not and individual country Secretary General sets U.N.’s agenda brings matters to the Security Council, serves as neutral mediator in international conflicts. Security Council Most powerful body of U.N. Responsible for maintaining international peace 15 members, 5 permanent, each with veto power – Britain, China, France, Russia, US. Responsible for maintaining international peace and security. Enforces rules through resolutions. 9votes required to pass a resolution, however all five permanent members must approve. If even one permanent member casts a veto, the resolution fails. Economic and Social Council 54 member countries serve on the Council, elected by General Assembly for three year terms Organizes on a committee system that conducts programs in medicine., education and social needs. Coordinates various agencies to promote higher living standards, full employment, respect for human rights and economic and social progress. International Court of Justice Also known as the World Court, the ICJ is the judicial arm of the U.N. Hears cases brought by nations against each other in territorial disputes, human rights violations, and trade disagreements. 15 judges elected by Security Council and General Assembly. Countries not required to participate but if it agrees it must abide by court’s decisions Trusteeship Council Established to oversee transition of colonies to independence Last colony transitioned was the Palau Islands which gained independence in 1994, making Trustee Council obsolete
