WELCOME TO MICRO ECONOMICS AB 224 Discussion of Syllabus and Expectations in the Class

SEMINAR There are 9 seminars (units 1-9) THE SEMINARS ARE GRADED AND ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. –Each is worth 15 points. –IF YOU CAN’T ATTEND, THERE IS AN EXERCISE SHOWN IN THE SEMINAR SECTION THAT TELLS HOW TO MAKE UP THE POINTS YOU LOST. –If you can’t attend, the seminars are archived for later review I use the seminars as a means of “lecturing”—covering the material in the chapter. The material will be presented using PPT slides and me talking about the main points Because of time (1 hour), typically can only cover one chapter

SEMINAR (CONT) You should read the chapter(s) complete before the seminar session. This will make the seminar much more effective Please feel free to ask questions about the material or items discussed in the seminar Type “??” if you have a question and I will respond as soon as possible Feel free to call me “Bill” Please try to minimize the “cross talk” between students I am prepared to discuss general questions about the homework in the seminar sessions. Please review the questions before the seminar PowerPoint slides used in the seminars will be posted in a separate folder in “doc.sharing”

INTRODUCTORY STATEMENTS Introductory statements are part of Unit 1 assignments This is not a graded exercise Used to introduce each other and help to develop a classroom atmosphere You are free to make “cross” posts to your fellow students, but this is not required. Please post the introduction early in the week If you don’t post an introduction by next Monday, I will contact you to “get you on board”

UNIT 1—ASSIGNMENT ON BUSINESS ETIQUETTE Unit 1 assignment consists of writing a one-to-two page paper on an aspect of Business Etiquette selected from the suggested topics shown in the explanation of the assignment in Unit 1. This exercise carries a grade of 40 points. Be careful to put in the correct drop box, don’t confuse with topic for research paper.

GRAPHING IN ECONOMICS Some homework problems will require the drawing of graphs. This can take time to learn, please practice when you get chance Use “Excel” when you have specific data and use “Word” when you are showing concepts Below are two excellent links which are shown in “doc.sharing” complete with the hyperlinks –Drawing in Word 2007 –How to draw the Graphs If you cannot draw the graphs for the homework assignment, specify and identify a graph in the book and use to discuss the assignment

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS There is an assignment for units 2-9 The assignment for unit 1 has already been discussed The questions are shown on the templates for each unit posted to doc.sharing Each project is worth 25 points and count toward final grade No need to use APA formatting or reference the textbook as a source Put in the drop box specified for each unit Due the time the unit closes

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS (CONT) I try to grade soon after the unit closes and will award a grade of “0” if you have not submitted I will accept late projects, subject to Kaplan’s late policy and posted grade will be changed –No project will be accepted after 14 days past the due date –Important to stay current with the projects—when students fall behind, it is difficult to catch up I am prepared to discuss general questions about the homework in the seminar sessions. Please review the questions before the seminar

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS There is one discussion question each in units 1-9 Each unit is worth 25 points toward the final grade Must make an initial posting and two “cross” postings to fellow students in each question In order to earn maximum credit, must make the initial post early in the week (on or before Saturday the unit is open) Important to spread postings out evenly throughout the entire week—don’t wait until the last day/hour to make the contributions Contributions must be made during the week of the unit. The opportunity closes when the unit closes and will not be re-opened

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS (CONT) Contributions must contain relevant content that added to the flow of the discussion There are no “wrong” answers—grade will not be reduced if you make a wrong statement I use the discussion questions to reinforce material in the textbook. I remain engaged during the week and will make comments, especially if you make an error that needs correcting. Please don’t get your feelings hurt if I correct you I will often suggest a different thread you might follow to further expand the content in the discussion question

RESEARCH PAPER Consult the list of Research Paper topics in the Research Paper icon shown in Unit 1 Select one topic. This will be the subject you will research over the course of the quarter. The following is a list of activities relating to the paper, the appropriate unit and possible points. It is important to meet the due dates so I can provide timely feedback. –UNIT 1 – select a paper topic 10 points –UNIT 4 – Prepare an outline 45 points –UNIT 6 –Submit a “ rough draft 50 points –UNIT 8 –Final paper is due 200 points

FINAL EXAM Taken during Week 10 (last unit) 60 multiple choice questions, each worth 1 point for a total of 60 points This exam counts toward the final grade average The exam can only be taken 1 time and there is a 2 hour time limit. Once you start the exam you must complete the exam in the allotted time limit Grade will not be available until several weeks after the course closes

UNIT 10 WRITING ASSIGNMENT In Unit 10 you will be required to write a minimum one page response to these questions: –1. Reflect and describe which key concepts and topics in this course have made you a stronger candidate to enter the business world. –2. Discuss how this course has affected you in your professional development as a student and as a person as well as encouraging you on your academic path. This assignment is worth 35 points toward the final grade

KAPLAN E-MAIL and INSTRUCTOR’S OFFICE Please check you Kaplan e-mail on a regular basis This is the only means of contacting the entire class or individuals I check my e-mail account on a daily basis and will try to respond as soon as possible to questions Use the “Virtual Office” for questions relating to the course material or homework—this will be seen by everybody so don’t make personal comments Items of a personal nature should be sent via e- mail

ANNOUNCEMENTS I use the “Announcement” portion of the Course Homepage to post the following information (please check regularly): –Essays that I have written or other material to enhance the course content for each unit. This material will either be in the announcement section or loaded in “doc.sharing” –Information regarding the new unit –Information regarding the posting of grades –Other relevant information concerning the course
