AVID, HB5, AND COLLEGE ADMISSIONS Fitting the Puzzle Together

AVID and Scheduling  Over the past several years, several attempts have been made to ensure AVID students can remain in AVID and meet all graduation requirements  Embedded Courses  Summer Programs/Acceleration  Innovative Schedules

House Bill 5 Brings New Challenges  Meeting the Requirements for Endorsements  STEM  Arts and Humanities  Business and Industry  Public Service  Multidisciplinary

WHILE WE WORK TO ENSURE AVID STUDENTS ARE HEAVILY INVOLVED AS SCHOOL LEADERS, DO THE ENDORSEMENT REQUIREMENTS MATTER TO COLLEGE ADMISSIONS?

Colleges and Universities Admissions  When asked about endorsements, most were not aware of what the endorsements were, and did not have a plan for considering them for admissions.  While required for state schools in Texas, private schools and out of state schools maintain their own requirements.  Colleges and Universities were not a large part of the decision process for the new requirements

Private Schools  Baylor, SMU, Austin College  Meet Core Requirements (4x4)  Difficulty of courses  ACT or SAT  Endorsements- “We will note it, but it has no bearing on admissions” -SMU  Similar answers for out of state schools.

Texas Public Schools  UNT, UT System, A&M System, U of H, SFA, Sam Houston, Texas Tech  Maintain the 4x4  Rank and GPA are key factors  Standardized Testing  Must have Algebra II  SFA- Foundation plus Endorsement plan, STEM might assist in acceptance to college of Engineering, but not to university.

Military  Complete High School Diploma  Meet Core Requirements (4x4)  Difficulty of courses  ACT or SAT  ASVAB

National Association of College Admission Counseling (2014) Grades Strength of Curriculum College Testing What are colleges looking for?

p. 28

Colleges at this time are most interested in the older admission standards.  Advise students in a way that lets them stay in AVID, and be involved in at least one area of interest.  AVID and one other thing should be possible, even on a seven period day, or in cases of double blocking (athletics or fine arts)  AVID, one area of interest, and a separate endorsement may be difficult.

Important Note  Based on the responses of current admission specialist and directors, colleges are still looking at the traditional 4x4 requirements.  This may change as the first HB5 class reaches graduation.  Colleges seemed most interested in the current admission cycles, versus those of the class of 2018. So, it is critical to maintain contact with college admission offices.

Possible Solutions  Multidisciplinary Endorsement may offer more freedom  Continue to support summer school/acceleration for required course (PE, Fine Arts, Health and Speech)  Continue the use of embedding credits in the AVID Elective  Courses outside of the traditional day (i.e. college credits, night school)  Careful planning is key  Advising students and parents early on the value of AVID, and avoiding misinformation on the endorsements
