1 Catch the Next is replicating and scaling up the Puente model (based at UC Berkeley) in Texas. Puente is proven, scalable, & cost-effective. CTN is a non-profit corporation, founded as a 501(c)3 to promote college readiness and completion. Located in NYC. Target population: At-risk students entering community college, including Hispanics and first-time college-goers. Catch the Next, Inc.

2 Catch the Next Wins Gates Momentum Challenge for Academic Advising The Gates team selected CTN because: Mentoring/counseling builds community to support engaged student learning environments. Contextualized teaching: integrating culture into the curriculum. Collaborative approach breaks down institutional silos to facilitate student success. For its mentoring and counseling work in Texas, CTN was one of three national groups chosen to present at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2013, “What’s Next in Higher Education?”

4 Accelerated Reading and Writing curriculum. Fall (DevEd-INRW 0304) and Spring (Credit-ENG 1301) taught by same professor. Learning Frameworks course. Counselors work closely with faculty. Each student has a volunteer mentor. Catch the Next expedites transition into credit-bearing courses We give students the tools for success in school and career.

5 Helps students develop professional networking skills. Develops students’ social and cultural capital. Emphasizes the value of “giving back” to their community. It provides students with caring adults concerned about their academic and career success. What Mentoring Does for Students

6 Help students through the application, admissions and financial aid processes. Close coordination with faculty & mentors. Organize field trips to 4-year institutions. Puente Model provides academic advising/counseling until graduation or transfer. Counselors are key

7 Puente and CTN hold the 8-day Foundational-Puente Institute at UC Berkeley. Fall Training – Three-day professional development in Texas—Puente and CTN trainers. Spring Training – Three-day professional development in Texas—Puente and CTN trainers. The approach is cost effective – no added staff at colleges. Catch the Next coordinates all Professional Development training for Texas faculty.

8 Catch the Next Provides Coaching and Support to College Teams Site visits Classroom observation Engagement with college presidents and senior staff, including Institutional Effectiveness Offices. Facilitate team building Intensive coaching for success.
