8  Goal 1. You should review how to use absolute values to add two integers. u In this lesson you will study the rules for adding two integers. Adding Integers

9 u Rule  1.  1. To add two integers with the same sign, sign, add their absolute values and write the common sign. ADDING TWO INTEGERS ADDING TWO INTEGERS u Examples u 3 + 4 = 7 u -2 + (-6) = -8

10 u Rule  2.  2. To add two integers with different signs, signs, subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger absolute value. Write the answer with the sign of the larger absolute value. ADDING TWO INTEGERS ADDING TWO INTEGERS u Examples  -2 + 5 = 3 |5| - |-2| = 3 3 is positive because 5 is positive |5| - |-2| = 3 3 is positive because 5 is positive  1 + (-7) = - 6 |-7| - |1| = 6 6 is negative because 7 is negative |-7| - |1| = 6 6 is negative because 7 is negative

13 Example 1 Adding Integers with the Same Sign  a. The sum of two positive integers is positive. ä 4 + 5 = 9  b. The sum of two negative integers is negative.  -12 + (-3) = -15

14 Example 2 Adding Integers with Different Signs  a. The sum of 5 and -8 is negative because -8 has a greater absolute value. ä 5 + (-8) = - 3 Subtract 5 from 8. Write sign of - 8.

15 Example 2 Adding Integers with Different Signs  b. The sum of 6 and -6 is zero because both integers have the same absolute value and different signs.  6 + (-6) = 0 Sum of opposites is zero. Are there any questions about Adding Two Integers?

16  Goal 2- You should learn how to add three or more integers. u You can model the addition of integers using a number line. u To add a positive number, move to the right. u To add a negative number, move to the left. Adding Three More Integers Adding Three or More Integers

18  Because you end at 2, it follows that: 3 + (-5) + 4 = 2.  3 + (-5) = -2 and -2 + 4 = 2 u or, since addition is commutative:  3 + 4 = 7 and 7 + (-5) = 2 Example 3 Modeling Addition with a Number Line

19  Goal 3- You should learn how to simplify expressions by adding like terms.  In the expression -5 x + 2 x + 4, the numbers -5 and 2 are the coefficients of x. The terms -5 x and 2 x are like terms because their variable parts are the same. Adding Like Terms

22 Example 4 Evaluating Expressions -1540(-16 x ) a. Simplify the expression: -15 x + 40 x + (-16 x )Solution  -1540(-16 x ) write problem  -15 x + 40 x + (-16 x ) write problem  = [-1540(-16)] x distributive property  = [-15 + 40 + (-16)] x distributive property  = 9 x simplify

23 Example 4 Evaluating Expressions b. Evaluate the expression when x = 2.Solution 2 9 x = 9(2) = 18.  When x = 2, the expression has the value of 9 x = 9(2) = 18. c. Evaluate the expression when x = 4.Solution 4 9 x = 9(4) = 36.  When x = 4, the expression has the value of 9 x = 9(4) = 36.

24 Example 5 Using Coefficients of 1 or -1 -53 Simplify the expression: - n + 5 n + 3Solution  -53 write problem  - n + 5 n + 3 write problem  = -153 coefficient of -n is -1  = -1 n + 5 n + 3 coefficient of -n is -1  = (-15)3 distributive property  = (-1 + 5) n + 3 distributive property  = 43 simplify  = 4 n + 3 simplify
