::. SESM & CRITICAL STEP Dr. Gabriella Carrozza SESM gcarrozza@sesm.it Coimbra, 10th March 2010

::. [1] ::.. SESM fields of interests Basic Research SESM is the Research Centre where the FINMECCANICA ToK is actually implemented. o ”Public-private laboratories” network o Researchers from industry and university collaborate day by day o Offices organized on purpose, located really close to Finmeccanica Group premises o PhD and master students, coordinated by senior researchers from Industry and University. o Five centers, (Rome, Giugliano, Genoa, Florence and Pisa), with 22 PhD students, 16 professors/researchers and 20 industrial researchers. Radar Research Centre (CRR) Iniziativa Software

::. [2] ::.. SESM fields of interests Industrial Research SESM delivers innovative solutions in several areas of Selex-SI and Finmeccanica Group interests: o Radar o Middleware and OS applications for MC&NRT application fields, especially for ATC o Safety and Security of ATM systems o Safety and Security of control centers (mobile or permanent) o Coastal monitoring systems for homeland security o Monitoring systems of fleets in narrow areas (such as harbors, airports...) Logistic Support Systems Complex industrial plants and machineries systems realization Realization of electronic publishing systems & services

::. P ROJECT P RESENTATION [3] ::.. Current Industrial Projects ATM SESM supports SELEX-SI in the development of COFLIGHT, flight data processor CARDAMOM, an open source middleware for ATM Enhanced air traffic management supervision system Testing and validation of operational systems developed worldwide RADAR SESM is developing T5, a control system for radar health monitoring and maintainance

::. [4] ::.. Current Research Projects

::. [5] ::.. Focus on current Research Projects SWIM SUIT The ATM community has identified interoperability needs transforming the ATM system from an essentially distributed network of independent units to an integrated network of cooperating systems able to cope with three times the current volume of traffic. the early introduction of System-Wide Information Management (SWIM) capability is necessary to facilitate this co-operation SWIM SUIT largely contributes to the technological assessment of SWIM by developing a SWIM prototype, mainly in order to veirfy its actual feasibility 11,8 M€ 6,3 M€ by EC 10 Countries; 20 Partners; 6 Industries; 1 Airport Managing Company; 2 Airlines; 4 ANSPs; 4 SMEs; 2 Research Centres; 1 University

::. SWIM SUIT ORGANIZATION

::. [7] ::.. Focus on current Research Projects SWIM SUIT AND THE SWIMBOX A prototype for the integration of heterogeneous testbeds The SWIM BOX acts as a gateway among different sites The Adapter translates data/services between legacy systems and SWIM-BOX

::. [8] ::.. Focus on current Research Projects SWIM BOX ON A SINGLE SITE….

::. [9] ::.. Focus on current Research Projects COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SWIM-BOXES….

::. P AGE 10 New Regulatory Approach Safety (EASA) Airport Capacity Technology & Operations (SESAR) Single European Sky initiative The Single European Sky (SES) is an ambitious initiative launched by the European Commission in 2004 to reform the architecture of European Air Traffic Management (ATM) The objective is to put an end to a way of organising air traffic management which has not changed since the 1960s and is one of the main reasons for the congestion of air traffic today ►SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) is the technological and operational dimension of the initiative SES Initiative dimensions SESAR is one of the most important Research & Development programmes ever launched by the European Community It aims at developing the new-generation Air Traffic Management system capable of ensuring the safety and fluidity of air transport over the next 30 years by committing the Aviation key players in Research & Development efforts: civil and military, legislators, industry, operators, users, ground and airborne The objectives of SESAR are to eliminate the fragmented approach to ATM, transform the European ATM system, synchronise the action plans of the different partners and combine their resources ::.. Focus on current Research Projects SESAR and SES

::. P ROJECT P RESENTATION [11] ::.. Focus on current Research Projects SESAR WP10 Designes, specifies and validates the En-route & TMA ATC Systems evolutions for enhancing Trajectory Management, Separation Modes, Controller Tools, Safety Nets, Airspace Management supporting functions and tools, Queue Management and Route optimisation features. WP 10.1.9 : ATC Systems Supervision Monitoring, Control and recovery of the whole ATC infrastructure. The ATC supervision system can also interface with external supervision systems (Regional, SWIM supervision), and will also monitor the communication with any other systems, such as SWIM or other external centres

::. [12] ::.. Focus on current Research Projects SESAR WP12 WP 12 encompasses all Research & Development activities to define, design, specify and validate the Airport Systems needed to support the SESAR ATM target concept. WP 12.1.9 This project addresses the problem of redefining airports supervision principles and processes according to a service oriented perspective, in order to ensure that the provided airport services are always delivered with the required QoS levels. Its ultimate aim is to identify the requirements for an airport operations supervision system, able to cope and integrate with service oriented paradigm, as wella as to implement a supervision system prototype

::. P ROJECT P RESENTATION [13] ::.. Open Research Topics SESM PROJECT CSTEP RES OBJISSUETIMELINE SWIM-SUIT Robustness Evaluation of OTS components Web services and SOA based systems From April 2010 Dependability of OTS- based SCSs through dependability measures and risk assessment Evaluation and assessment of SWIM-BOX implemented prototype SESAR 10.1.9 Robustness Evaluation of OTS components Robustness evaluation of SELEX-SI solutions to intergrate into the SPV system (CORBA based middleware) and of OTS items (e.g., LINUX OS) Sept. 2010 (preparation) Spring 2011 (development and actual system) Developing techniques for on-line monitoring and fault diagnosis Detection and diagnosis of software faults into the monitored ATC system. Middleware, DDS, SWIM Dependability of OTS- based SCSs through dependability measures and risk assessment; SPV system implemented prototype (Web services, middleware, COTS) Late 2011

::. [14] ::.. Open Research Topics SESM PROJECT CSTEP RES OBJISSUETIMELINE SESAR 12.1.9 Developing techniques for on-line monitoring and fault diagnosis Detection and diagnosis of software faults into the monitored ATC system. Middleware, DDS, SWIM Sept. 2010 (preparation) Sprimg-Summer 2011 (development and actual system) Dependability of OTS- based SCSs through dependability measures and risk assessment; SPV system implemented prototype (Web services, SOA architectures, DDS implementations, SWIM) Late 2011- Early 2012 We are also involved in SESAR WP8 and WP14 dealing with wide information management. o Objectives, ideas and activities related to these transveral project will come and hold throughout the whole duration of the project

::. [15] ::.. Business and outcomes CSTEP BUSINESS OBJSWIM SUITSESAR 10.1.9SESAR 12.1.9 Developing industrial strategies and marketable tools for evaluating OTS components in SCSs ✔✔✔ Realising appropriate mechanisms for on-line monitoring, diagnosis and dynamic reconfiguration of SCSs ✔✔ Devising highly competitive, dependable, robust and certifiable safety critical software systems for both public and private end-users ✔✔✔ All the identified project are oriented to deliver prototypes quite close to real industrial products. Support tools coming from CSTE would bring a significant plus for our solutions
