T2K IFOP 11/7 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark INGRID On-Axis Detector Japan/France/UK effort Must be operating April 1, 2009 for first beam.

T2K IFOP 11/7 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark MPPC (aka SiPMs) Status 280m detectors require readout of ~10 5 fibers, most in 0.2T magnetic field. 1 mm Conventional photodetectors were unsuitable, so we decided to use SiPMs despite lack of commercial availability when adopted. Hamamatsu have now produced a version which meets T2K specifications, will deliver 5k/month starting in early 2008 at 1,900 ¥ (plus 5% tax) when purchased within Japan.

T2K IFOP 11/7 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Project Integration and Schedule

T2K IFOP 11/7 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Overall Technical Situation All sub-detectors progressing well, minor delays here and there but overall the progress is on track for on-time installation. Major technical risks are being retired and milestones reached (too many to report in this brief meeting, but we have results from prototypes of almost all sub-detectors showing technical feasibility). No major technical problems currently seen. The installation and commissioning schedule for the 280m detectors is aggressive, in particular for the magnet/SMRD, but large amounts of effort are going into planning and no show-stoppers are known.

Contributions and Funding by Country

T2K IFOP 11/7 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Overall funding situation… Mostly good. The only major uncertainty for committed items is the UK funding for the ECAL, which we should find out later this year or early next. However: –There is no overall cash reserve or contingency for the project. –A few items have been identified which fall in the cracks between commitments, or where the cost was substantially greater than the very early estimates available when the project was divided between countries. –The items that are big enough to require the attention of the IFOP are the magnet installation and the 280m Off- Axis detector cooling system. –The total amount is small compared to the project cost, but the last bit is always hardest to find…

T2K IFOP 11/7 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Magnet Installation

T2K IFOP 11/7 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Magnet Installation

T2K IFOP 11/7 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Magnet Installation

T2K IFOP 11/7 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark 280m Off-Axis Cooling System Heat input from magnet and electronics must be removed. The scintillator/fiber detectors are rather sensitive to temperature, and require T<25C for sustained periods. Integrated cooling solution being pursued, but it will not be cheap.

T2K IFOP 11/7 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Cost to Complete these Items Magnet refurbishment largely done. Magnet shipping contract now issued by CERN, came in within cost allocated (whew!). However there is not enough money left over to deal with magnet installation. Magnet installation currently under bid, maximum cost is 82.1 M¥ (~740 k$), unlikely(?) to be substantially less. Cooling system cost estimates not completely final, but looks like ~$500k with about $200k of that as the cost of the chillers.

T2K IFOP 11/7 Imperial College/RAL Dave Wark Cost to Complete these Items We therefore need to raise $1.2M, with about $200k of that as the cost of the chillers. Our US collaborators have agreed to approach DOE for permission to provide the chillers if enough contingency exists within their grant. Russia will contribute in kind, and if the other nations other than Japan will contribute an amount equivalent to $5k/author/year for the last two years of construction that would correspond to $1.06M, which should be sufficient to cover the magnet installation and detector cooling.
