2 Welcome to Ljubljana EF3 extends a warm welcome to Ljubljana. Although Ljubljana is one of the youngest capitals in the European Union, it nevertheless reveals a long history and a real wealth of cultural and artistic monuments. A city with a medieval heart, a city of the Baroque and Art Nouveau, with an old castle resting above it like a sleeping beauty. Allow yourselves to be guided past historical sights, featuring the mysterious old squares, narrow streets, churches and fountains. Discover also the masterpieces of the monumental architectural visionary Jože Plečnik, who made Ljubljana famous and placed it among the modern capitals of the 20th century.

3 LJUBLJANA Some history — Capital of the Republic of Slovenia, a European Union member state since 2004 — Area: 275 sq km (170.8 sq mi) — Population: 280,000 — Official language: Slovenian; people in Slovenia are generally well versed in English, those living near the Austrian and Italian borders also in German and Italian — Symbol: Ljubljana Dragon — Currency: euro (since 2007) — Time zone: GMT + 1 hour Legend about the origin of Ljubljana Ljubljana is said to be founded by the Greek mythological hero Jason, who had stolen the golden fleece from King Aetes and fled from him, along with his fellow Argonauts on the ship Argo, across the Black Sea and up the rivers Danube, Sava and Ljubljanica all the way to the source of the latter. There the Argonauts disassembled their ship to be able to carry it to the Adriatic Sea, put it together again, and return to Greece. On their way to the sea, they made a stop at Ljubljana Marshes, the dwelling place of a monster, which Jason fought and killed. The monster, now referred to as the Ljubljana Dragon, found its place atop the castle tower depicted on the Ljubljana coat of arms.

4 LJUBLJANA Things to see Ljubljana Castle Ljubljana Castle hangs omnipresent above the city. There is a tourist train up here from Prešernov trg, as well as a modern funicular from Krekov trg, but a better option is to walk up the steep slopes and savour the view of the city and surrounding mountains in the distance. From June to September, the castle's history is bought to life by knowledgeable guides who lead visitors through the various halls, chapel and the dungeon. Year round, a hi-tech audiovisual show delves into the history of the city, including that of the castle, showing how it has evolved throughout the ages and been influenced by the surrounding countries, their rulers and architects Mestni Muzej Ljubljana (City Museum Ljubljana) The impressive City Museum of Ljubljana is housed in the elegant Auersperg Palace, with myriad displays, children's workshops, adult classes, as well as a congress hall and a relaxed café. The main permanent collections follow the evolution of the city, the Auersperg family and Ljubljana's citizens. Look out too for remnants of old Roman Ljubljana in the lower floor, which have recently been excavated.

5 LJUBLJANA Things to see Old Town Squares Mestni trg, Stari trg and Gornji trg are connecting squares, which hug the base of Castle Hill and ripple through the heart of the Old Town in a flurry of appealing baroque and medieval buildings. Many Ljubljana’s most popular cafés, bars and restaurants are located in or around these long squares, which buzz with life day and night, especially in summer. This cobbled expanse is the best venue in Ljubljana for an aimless stroll, stopping off for a bite to eat or drink on the way. Prešernov trg (Prešeren Square) Prešeren Square is at the very heart of the city both historically and spiritually. The square boasts three river crossings, the landmark Frančiškansa Cerkev Marijinega Oznanjenja (Franciscan Church of the Annunciation) and a statue of seminal Slovenian poet France Prešeren. Ivan Zajec's and Maks Fabiani's dramatic monument to the man celebrated as the country's greatest bard stands proud overlooking the scene. The figure above him is not his unrequited love Julija Primic, as many people presume, but is meant to depict his poetic muse. It is also the scene of regular summer concerts and the epicentre of any civic events and festivities in Ljubljana.
