2 A Brief History of Hawai‘i Over 1500 years ago The Hawaiian Islands are discovered by Polynesian voyagers arriving on outrigger sailing canoes. 500 years later Tahitians arrived bringing their beliefs in their gods and demi- gods and instituting their social strict hierarchy based on a kapu system. Year 1820 The first Protestant missionaries arrived on Hawai‘i Island. Hawai‘i became a port for seamen, traders and whalers. Year 1893 American Colonists overthrew the Hawaiians Kingdom in a peaceful, yet still controversial coup. Year 1898 Hawai‘i became a territory of the United States. 20th Century Sugar and pineapple plantations fueled Hawai‘i’s economy bringing an influx of Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and Portuguese immigrants. Dec. 7, 1941 The Japanese launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on O‘ahu. Aug. 21, 1959 Hawai‘i became the 50th State of the United States.

3 Basic Facts about Hawai‘i… Six Major islands: Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i, Maui, and Hawai‘i Island (also known as Big Island). Hawai‘i has its own time zone (Hawai‘i Standard Time) which is 5 hours behind Eastern Standard Time; 2 hours behind Pacific Standard Time. Hawai‘i does not observe Daylight Savings Time. Honolulu on the island of O‘ahu is the capital of the Hawaiian Islands. Over 70% of the population resides on O‘ahu. The average temperature year round is between 75 - 85 degrees F.
